Gun Cleaning/Rust Prevention

Whats everybody using for cleaning and for rust prevention while in the safe? I watched a video earlier of 6 or 7 different gun specific anti rust treatments along with plain old WD-40 and the WD performed as good or better then the best firearm specific product for rust prevention. I'm just looking for something to use while the guns are stored in the safe and not something long term like Cosmoline. In other words something that I dont have to remove before I want to go shooting. What say you?
 
I Don't know where you got your WD 40 info but in my expeience it's worthless as a rust preventative. There was a test done on this web site a while back.If you go to the Articles section and in the search box put in rust prevention it will bring it up. The product I picked from it is EESOX, been using it ever since, works great.

I think he might mean WD specialist. it came in second or third among maybe 50 tested for rust prevention. never understood the hate for WD 40 and it served me well for 40 years
 
WD40 works well to dissipate moisture and protect against rust, it will form a gummy layer. That's why it is a poor lubricate not too long after application.
 
I'm with JEFFPPC on WD40 unless the Formula has been changed . In the " good old days " .... many years ago ......... I used to help Dealers at Gunshows . One night after a Show , I got home late . There was a light rain leaving the Show and the blankets I had covering a few Rifles got damp . I had used WD40 on the Rifles prior to wrapping them in the blanket . As I was very tired , I decided to leave the Rifles in the Trunk until morning . Bad move ! A light film of Rust had formed and it took some effort to get rid of most of it . To make a long story shorter ..... that is the last time I ever used WD40 again . I knew a Metallurgist and asked him to Polish some typical Barrel Steel . I then devised a Steam Test to accelerate Rusting effects and Stopwatch Timed how long it took to Rust . One of the Shooting Magazines in those days did a Rust Inhibitor Test and found a Product which stood up to 45 Days in Salt Water IIRC . This was decades ago , but it was a Formula based on what the Swedish Military used plus some Additives . My friend and I bought enough to last for many years . I have had no Rust problem over many decades . The surprising thing is that the Viscosity of SS2 is like water , not like a Grease . I also use RIG or a combination of RIG & SS2 on a Rag for Tools . Now the bad News : The Company whose original name was Totally Dependable Products ( Ziegierville , Pa. ) made SS2 All Purpose Gun Lubricant but disappeared years ago . They also made a Product called Stock Sheen . When other Dealers at the Shows saw our Firearms , they all asked what we used to make them shine like that . As usual , when you find a superb product , buy enough to last !
 
There is a WD40 product that works well-- WD40 Specialist Long Term Corrosion Inhibitor. Regular WD40 is worthless as a RP.

I've seen evidence also of Froglube (yeah, I know) also working well as RP (at least it works well for something!). Hornady's latest all-in-one tested well too.

Lately I'm using a product called RadcoLube which is one of the few other products that meets the new super-stringent mil spec that G96 synthetic also meets. I think there are the only two products certified to that spec. I got a big bottle off Amazon and I'm liking it so far.

I'm generally not a fan of CLP as I think those are three separate functions. But dang it if that Radco stuff doesn't do all three pretty well. I wouldn't try it as a bore solvent, but it does dissolve carbon and varnish while leaving a nice light oil film behind that just looks "clean". It's superb on pistols.

The video shows testing of some 46 products for rust preventative.
Frog Lube made it to the podium as well.

The key ingredient Hornady labels Dynaglide plus is what remains after the cleaning solvent evaporates.
Different gun lubes have different "weights" or consistencies.

I keep a can on my reloading bench and blast dies, press rams, and shell holders with it.
My forster stuff will rust if I don't use something and Oneshot does a great job of preventing rust.

Note the Oneshot Case Lube is different. I don't have any experience with the case lube as a rust preventative.
 
I don't understand why people wouldn't use what has been proven to be the current best. I use Essox and like JEFFPPC said it works great. My stock sheen is birchwood casey, does an exellent job
 
Long term I use Rig. Recently started using WD40 Specialist Long Term Corrosion Inhibitor. Bought it to coat tools, appears to work well, so I am trying it out on firearms.

Nope it was plain old WD-40. I couldn't find the one test that I mentioned in my original post but I did find another one and they also used plain old WD-40 and it held up really well according to their test, which consisted of treating the metal and then spraying each one with a mix of a rust promoting solution over a period of a few days I believe. I have seen another test where they submerge the metal plates in a solution for 96 hours I believe and the WD didn't fare to well but not many of the others did either. I'll probably try the Essox.
 
I like to use a wax Something like the Birchwood Casey wax is ok but the Bees wax for Saddles is the same at a fraction of the price good on steel levees a nice smooth sheen and prevents rust also good on any oiled wood stocks.
 
Oils help, but I regularly check that my gun safe always has a working dehumidifier rod. I needed a replacement as my original rod burnt out....cheap insurance.
$15 for a dehumidifier rod on Amazon.

what some people may not know is WD-40 is real good as a starting fluid. saved taking apart carbs on small engines sitting all winter
 
SPQR ...... Did the Romans conquer in the name of WD-40 ? Thanks for that Carb tip . I have a clogged-up Weedwhacker & will try WD-40 when the weather warms up . Had an old Marine shooting buddy who used it on his sore knees . Told him to stop , but nothing deters a Marine .
