Hi guys,
I realize their may be more productive forums to ask this question on but this one is my favorite so I’ll give it a try first.
I’m looking for a recommended outfitter to book a full service varmint hunt with next year. This will be my one and only chance for a serious varmint shooting adventure in the US because I’m heading home to Australia in Dec 2006. At the moment, I live in Virginia. I imagine South Dakota or Montana is probably where I should be looking at.
I’ll have my own rifle, ammo, rangefinder etc but I’ll be looking to fly there so I’ll be after a guide that offers an airport pick-up, transport, accommodation +/- catering and guiding to the best shooting spots. Sadly, my wife has no interest in this so I’ll either come alone or bring one mate with me. If I come alone, I don’t mind teaming up with one other like minded shooter.
What I’m really looking for is a warm-up day featuring maximum prairie dog devastation at medium ranges,<300m). Then I’d like a guide who would be willing to work with me on the second or subsequent days for some really long range stuff. Ideally, I’d like to bag a 1000yd shot before I go home. In other words, I’m chasing quantity on the first day then quality on the later days. So, hospitality and flexibility are what I’m looking for in a guide.
I shoot a Custom Nesika varmint rifle in 6BR for the high volume shooting. For the longer range stuff, I can either stick with the 6BR,it’s a 1:8 twist with a long throat) or I can switch the barrel out for a 6.5/284. Space permitting, I might also bring my AR in 223 for the shorter range stuff.
I’m open to any suggestions you might have on best outfitter, destination, time of year or anything else of value…….
Thanks,
