Groups go to hell after 7 shots?

You don't even need to bore scope it. Look to see how it's cleaning and how much copper is in it. If the barrel is loading up with copper especially on top of the lands you have a fouling problem. The fouling could be starting all the way back at the throat if the throat is really rough. This would be a good indicator that the barrel is toast. All you have to do is look at your patches and they will show you with the solvent reacting to the copper in the bore and count how many patches it's taking to clean it. Also just shine a flashlight into the bore on the muzzle end. If loading up with copper on the tops of the lands you will see it here as well.

I've seen plenty of .308 barrels go more than 3K rounds. Depends on the quality of the steel and how the barrel is made. Some barrels made the bore gets work hardened and they don't last as long as others.

Firelapping? Factory barrel and giving you problems you've got nothing to lose. Especially with that many rounds thru it and if the throat is really rough. I'd say you have a 50/50 chance on it doing anything.

Never fire lap a custom barrel makers barrel. In our case you will void any type of warranty. If it is a custom barrel it would be wise for you to talk to the barrel maker before doing something like this. Especially if the barrel is new.

On the how the barrel is made thing....years ago, a friend, who built and worked on a large number of M1A match rifles (.308 caliber) told me that, in his experience, the cut barrels had significantly longer accuracy life, as compared to a particular brand of button rifled barrels.

Boyd, That's what I was getting at. The comment about work hardening of the bore.

Keep in mind guys there are a lot of variables that cause wear. Heat, types of powder being used (some are more abrasive than others etc...) bullets, how the barrel is being cleaned, types of cleaners being used, conditions it is being shot in etc.....

Shoot your 6 shot group and wait 15 minutes, go back and shoot another 6 shot group, wait 15 minutes and do again.\
Maybe you will never shoot a 10 round one hole group, I shot trap and was hitting 24 straight and then miss number 25. Well I could always break the first 15, so after 15 hits I just started counting over from 1-10 and end up with perfect 25 score! Guess what? that put me on A team and I didn't like that group much, so I went back to missing number 25 and got back on B team where the great people were.

That is a very funny story and probably very true, also I would like to welcome you to the forum. Lets face it he has a wore out factory barrel ??? I have seen a few decent factory barrels but I have NEVER seen a great one, I have owned many very very good premium top shelf custom barrels and a few GREAT top shelf custom barrels. You may get an occasional factory barrel that will shoot a clover leaf group but they generally never consistently do that. A complete ready to shoot 700 rem. can cost as little as $400 and good premium barrel costs as much as $350 so how much is that factory barrel really worth? It makes no sense to me at all trying to find another load it MIGHT shoot ok with bullets @ .040 cts apiece and powder, primers and so on, and all that work for maybe another couple of hundred rounds or so, as far as I am concerned thats just throwing money away that could be spent looking for a load on a good barrel, also I believe if you are forced to have to shoot a factory barrel, when it is new fire lapping could have some benefits in cleaning and maybe a little accuracy, but a barrel with 3K+ on it ??? I don't see any benefit there at all. If your shooting much at all it is a expensive hobby PERIOD, no one will argue that powder bullets and primers are expendable shooting commodities,.....Well my friends so are barrels! shoot them until your no longer satisfied with there performance then unscrew them and install another one, period the end! There is no such thing as a can of engine rebuild, when the rings and cylinder walls are wore out, all the stp in the world won't really help it,....same with your barrel when the rifling's are gone,THERE GONE! Screw another tube on that .308 and have as much fun putting on the next 3K rounds as you did the last 3k round ;) enjoy :)
Wayne.

frankg,
Just got my barrels back from Joel Kendrick. Joel had my Bartlein PPC barrel and my 30BR Rock Creek barrel for Melonite. I am anxious to get some rounds down range.

Butch, Let me know how it works? Email me here at work. I want to know other details as well before you start shooting. I'll drop you a line.

Joel is an engineer for Mimi Trutec. They have quit working for individuals and only doing manufacturing, government, and any volume customer. They do have a gunsmith guy in Georgia that does a large volume. He will do your barrels for $65 ea.
