Grizzly Lathes

Yeah...alot of the shininess is not dependent on the lathe. Tooling, set up and type of metal determines the shininess of a cut. Type of metal being biggest, I think. Try threading some cheap cold rolled, lol.

This form die was made on my Grizzly...mine is an old Grizzly and I'm blown away with the accuracy and precision I'm getting out of it. For some reason, the new ones don't feel as smooth as mine.

Right off the machine...the die and lock ring...no abrasives...the steel was a piece of old barrel. Krieger I believe.

Knowledge, Tooling and proper Oils is what it takes to do good threading Or machine work. One thing money can't buy is KNOWLEDGE. ;D Larry ;D
Larry I have seen some pretty nasty threads come off Grizzly's yours included. The best I have seen are decent, but I have never seen a nice shiny smooth thread.
Look at Ridge way. He cover what I said before. Being gone 3 years can make a difference I guess.
I have seen many of ugly guns win also. So have you. ;D ;D ;D Larry

Wouldn't this be do to that most folks start out with a cheaper lathe and the inexperience shows in the work?

My g0509g does just fine. I've had no issues with it at all
Same here. My 0509G cuts great. I had an 0504Z which worked well but this on is a nice machine. The bed is 10" wide too. As someone said, go for bed width, more stable and it is the truth. It is 3 phase so consider that in your decision. Happy chip making.

I agree that a person will do better work after a period of time and due diligence. I will go on to say a heavier better quality machine will shorten your learning curve.
No complaints about Grizzly or other brands as they all have entry level and advanced machines.

I just put new spindle bearings in my lathe. I bought class 3. That is the lowest end bearings that Timken sells as precision. A lot of the better lathes use a class 0. Class zero is only guaranteed to have under .00015 TIR. While class 3 is .0003". My 2 bearings and races cost me 800.00. The zeros where about 600 each. What kind of bearings do you think come in a 2999.99 machine? I am not knocking them because they fill a price point, and I wouldnt expect much for 3k. I know that they seem to do nice work once the bearings are upgraded and motors isolated.

Ridgeway, nice work. HSS or Carbide?

High-quality NSK spindle bearings, Is that just a gimmick?

Ray

Alex, what I used to thread that particular die was a kennametal toolbit holder with a HSS bit. Turning wise...HSS as well.

I thread at 200 where I have a tenon and 220 or 270 otherwise. I usually touch up the bit before threading. I do want to try a full profile carbide at some point....

Southbend lathes use bronze spindle bearings. You can adjust them as they wear to keep runout to a min.

Can you adjust the bronze bushings to have less runout than a good quality bearing?
Will bronze bushing run a high speedssay above 2000 rpm?

Hal, We know the answer to that. No and no.

Hal,
It hasn't hit 100 yet and we've had rain. My 10EE is so quiet and if the cooling fan wasn't running, I wouldn't know it was on.

Butch,

Are you running the original speed control system on your 10EE ? Are the tubes still available?

T W Hudson

Mine is an original 1956 WIAD. I have an extra set of tubes and my deceased friend gave me sockets and another type tube that he claims will work. My originals (I think) work fine and with the extras, I believe I am good to go.

Sounds like you are in good shape.

Those machines create machine tool lust in my heart. My 12x30 Hendey gear head with the roller bearing spindle and my inherited 1918 Simplex gear head with plain bearings meet my needs and limited skill set but I can't resist laying eyes on a 10EE every time I see one at auction or at work in a shop.

American machine tool manufacturing at its best! You will understand the good feeling I get knowing that yours is in competent hands and will be passed on at some point to a worth caretaker.
