Grinch-fest at Bart's

Grinch-fest at Bart's

Last Saturday Dean and Brett Stroud from Cape Girardeau (Grinch Creators) along with Gregg King came for a day of tuning and testing! Weather was a bit on the cool side so everyone headed into the "Monkey Hut" ( how it came by its name is another story) to setup and shoot.

Gregg on the Bench, Brett on the spottting scope!

First up to bat was Gregg King with a brand new Krieger 12 twist barrel shooting 80 grain Dominators. Gregg has been on a roll this year winning the last couple of matches he attended. A few months back Gregg ordered the last 12 twist Krieger that Bruno's had in stock. It's my experience that cut rifle barrels often need a few rounds on them before they start to shoot. However with Gregg's new barrel that wasn't the case. It started shooting right out of the gate. Here's a pic of his groups. The amazing thing about this barrel is its load window. Starting on the first row at the far left Gregg kept going up in powder on each group. The last group looked like it flipped a shot but I thought it was due to conditions. On second row right below it we re-shot the same powder charge and it shot a nice .129. Now we are working back to the left on the second row. The barrel allowed us to go up in powder one more time before the tune came apart shooting a .109. For a short range barrel that is a incredibly large tuning window. I'm not for sure I've ever seen a barrel with that wide of a window. Brett's words were, "he's the luckiest little SOB I've ever seen!"

Next up was Dean's rifle with a new 8 twist brux barrel. Dean had preloaded about 50 rounds of 103 grain Dominators to try. The first group out of the gun was less than satisfactory. So we started seating the bullets deeper into the case .005 each group. After our forth attempt we hit pay-dirt. The last group was a nice .109 with 4 shots in it. We called it good.

Brett broke out his rifle. It had an old barrel (1200 rounds) that he knew shot. His goal was to test N135 with the Grinch and 80 grain bullets. The first row starting with the .117 and going left was four different loads. Looks like the the N135 has some merit. The bottom row was trying to fine tune the seating depth. I believe we settled on a depth that was about .015 deeper into the lands then were we started.

Billy Steven's this years Super Shoot winner even dropped in and made a cameo appearance. He wanted to come down and meet the boys and say hello to Gregg whom we have known for the past 20 years.

A file photo of Billy but I think it pretty much captures the essence of his personality!

A great day of shooting and comradery at the Sauter Estate!

Bart,
Thanks for posting all the pictures. Looks like a great place to shoot. Would like to hear the story behind the Monkey Hut sometime.

Are the new 80 gr bullets avaliable yet. Checked your Web site but not listed there yet.

Recieved an email from Sarah at JGS today. She has 6 reamer prints on file for the Grinch. What freebore and neck for the 80 gr bullets? For your 106 gr bullets?

Thanks
George

We are taking orders for the 80 gr Dominators. I just haven't advertised them on the website or the 103 Dominator for the same reasons. I'd like to get a bunch made before turning them loose. I've got jackets in hand and I'm waiting for cores.

I'd say for an all around reamer the .135 will work for both the 80s as well as the 103gr. We have been shooting a .264 neck but I'm going to give a .268 a try.

Bart

Bart,

I've been following both the Grinch and 6BR-AI with interest. What would you consider the optimal twist for the 80s? Any freebore and twist recommendation that will work well with both the 68s and 80s?

I'm buying a Panda to try my hand at short range VFS. I'll call in to get in line for some 80s.

Thanks
Terry

12 twist works great for the 80s and it will shoot the 68s ok. If your not going to shoot heavy bullets like a 105 gr the 120 FB is prefect.

I was really looking forward to doing a new build with this calber to replace a couple of PPC that I use for varmint hunting. After talking with JGS about reamers and finding a 400.00 price for a reamer and gauges, 100 bucks apiece for gauges. New barrel, dies and new brass all comes to well over a 1000.00 bucks. And that is using a action and stock I already have. Guess I'll be using my PPC a good while longer.

Still want to try some of the new bullets though. Wonder how 80 grainers will work in a PPC.

I'd say they would work fine but you'll still need the 12 twist barrel.

The free bore question has me stumped, i have a .120 free bore on a 6mm imp. and it works great with a 105. and if i drop a 68 down the barrel and size a case it will not pick up the bullet, no resistance and the bullet will fall out when you stand the gun up. This reamer was checked on an optical comparator so it is what is suppose to be. So if an 80 is .070 longer, so at best would be .070 in the neck. New reamer coming with a .060 free bore, we will see if how much i need to throat it. ........ jim

120 seemed a bit long to me also if I'm also going to shoot the 68 class. But I'm sure Bart knows best.

Don't be! The .120 has worked for with the 80 gr Dominators. The 80 gr Dominators is made on .080 longer jackets but the bullet also has .060 more bearing surface than my other bullets. It will work!

I am just envious of that room! Just needs a leather recliner, cause while I like my shooting friends, I do not want to share a couch! ;)

Gotta see a photo out that window...

Free bore is free bore, no matter what case is used. All starts at the end of the chamber, how can PT&G claim a world record reamer for the Dasher for the 105 bullet be a .105 free bore? If i can't hold a 68 gr. bullet in the case about .010 pushed in with my fingers and no land marks when i close the bolt, the 80 sure won't work at .120 fb. With the imp. case i don't need the capacity for sure and the bullet back in the long neck won't hurt a thing. Can't wait till they come....... jim
