6MM GRINCH Defeats entire Field of 6PPCs

Yes, the Grinch held its own and congratulations to those who used it. But what is always lost in these conversations is that the new or slightly modified cartridges are usually being used by the top shooters. Give Bart a straight 6BR or even a .222 in the same match and I bet he is right there at the top. There is never enough credit given to those few who master the art of shooting versus the latest and greatest cartridge craze. When you give the new round to the shooters who are normally in the lower third and they move into the upper third then you will have something.
What you just said is where Brett was, most of the time he was about the middle of the pack, he is now in the top 5 and 10 most of the time even win a match now and then. I haven't been to a match for a while but even I went up, most of the time when I looked at the score chart I started at the bottom and then looked up the chart, never won a match but after shooting the Grinch with Barts 80s I have finished 2nd a few times even shot small group a few times.

"Ok serious question. Why use the PPC as a base to wildcat than the 6BR that has the 308 bolt face."

Nobody is absolutely sure why the PPC is more accurate in short range BR than the 6BR is. But it does in fact seem to be. There are some guys that think the width of the powder column is the reason. In time the Grendal variants my overtake the 6BR based cartridges in 600 and 1K yard benchrest, only time will tell.

Good question, The 6mm BR imp.shoots an 80 gr. very easy at 3250 in small groups, and the 103 - 105 at 2920-2960 easy and has set records and is doing well. I think the BR. will take more pressure, but it works easy and you are not on the edge. ......... Th e little guy is starting to come on, we will see I guess.... jim

I'm testing a straight 6 Grendel now. May shoot a match with it this weekend, depending on the weather. I'm using a 12 twist barrel and 80gr bullets at 3,300fps.

The appeal of the Grendel case is in part, no fireforming...just neck it up or down and load ammo. I do turn necks on anything that I neck up or down, as a rule. It is nothing more nor less, than a .070" long PPC, but without the fire forming. The Lapua brass is top notch, as good as any brass I've ever seen and has small primers and small flash holes, fwiw.

Another area of appeal for it is if you have a dedicated ppc bolt face. With this case, rebating rims of br brass is pointless, IMHO.

In theory, I should be able to shoot light bullets at equal pressures as a ppc but without long drop tubes and the pains that go along with handling cases that are absolutely filled to the point of being too much of a hassle.

Or...shoot light bullets faster than a ppc. FWIW, what few 68's I've shot, shot very well at about 3,700fps!! That's screamin'!

Or..shoot heavier bullets at comparable speeds to a ppc with 68's, i.e., 80's at 3,300fps. I can squeeze a little more speed from it but I don't want to trash my new brass.

Another plus side is I can use off the shelf Redding S type bushing dies for a Grendel...just drop in the appropriate bushing. I use a Redding comp PPC die to seat with.

I've been shooting a 30 cal version of a Grendel since 2007. I could be shooting a 30BR before it gets dark tonight but I shoot this because I feel it is marginally better than a BR.

A 30 Grendel owns the record for small group at 100. 5 shots at 100 yards @ .0077". That record use to be held by a .222 and the record stood for 40 years. Along came a 30 Grendel and the record fell shortly after.

For the 30, I modify redding dies for both the sizer and seater dies...some prefer a simple wilson type seater.

Much of what we do in this sport is done because...that's what everyone else does. I'm not one of those people. There are good arguments both for and against going with what everyone else shoots/does but I really, really like it when something is as simple as a 6 or 30 Grendel is, and works as well as they do.

Another thought on this, is from what I've seen out of the Grinch and the 6 Grendell's that are using the 12 Twist barrels in the 100-200 yd games is that with the 80gr bullets they can hold their own against the ppc's at 100, and not be affected as much by wind at 200. WD

I'm sure there is truth in that the 80s hold better at 200
I'm just not convinced yet the cartridge can shoot a little .1 at 200yd a tuned in ppc that can shoot a couple..150 or .170 group at 200 puts a lot of ground between them and everyone else
