Ok serious question. Why use the PPC as a base to wildcat than the 6BR that has the 308 bolt face.
I'm testing a straight 6 Grendel now. May shoot a match with it this weekend, depending on the weather. I'm using a 12 twist barrel and 80gr bullets at 3,300fps.
The appeal of the Grendel case is in part, no fireforming...just neck it up or down and load ammo. I do turn necks on anything that I neck up or down, as a rule. It is nothing more nor less, than a .070" long PPC, but without the fire forming. The Lapua brass is top notch, as good as any brass I've ever seen and has small primers and small flash holes, fwiw.
Another area of appeal for it is if you have a dedicated ppc bolt face. With this case, rebating rims of br brass is pointless, IMHO.
In theory, I should be able to shoot light bullets at equal pressures as a ppc but without long drop tubes and the pains that go along with handling cases that are absolutely filled to the point of being too much of a hassle.
Or...shoot light bullets faster than a ppc. FWIW, what few 68's I've shot, shot very well at about 3,700fps!! That's screamin'!
Or..shoot heavier bullets at comparable speeds to a ppc with 68's, i.e., 80's at 3,300fps. I can squeeze a little more speed from it but I don't want to trash my new brass.
Another plus side is I can use off the shelf Redding S type bushing dies for a Grendel...just drop in the appropriate bushing. I use a Redding comp PPC die to seat with.
I've been shooting a 30 cal version of a Grendel since 2007. I could be shooting a 30BR before it gets dark tonight but I shoot this because I feel it is marginally better than a BR.
A 30 Grendel owns the record for small group at 100. 5 shots at 100 yards @ .0077". That record use to be held by a .222 and the record stood for 40 years. Along came a 30 Grendel and the record fell shortly after.
For the 30, I modify redding dies for both the sizer and seater dies...some prefer a simple wilson type seater.
Much of what we do in this sport is done because...that's what everyone else does. I'm not one of those people. There are good arguments both for and against going with what everyone else shoots/does but I really, really like it when something is as simple as a 6 or 30 Grendel is, and works as well as they do.
