Greasing lug abutments

Does anyone hold their trigger back as they are closing they're bolt to try to grease the abutments without it wiping off?

Obviously this is done just after cleaning and with an empty rifle.

I'm not understanding what squeezing the trigger on an empty chamber, while closing the bolt after greasing would accomplish. o_O

On an empty chamber, the trigger shouldn't affect the bolt lugs to my way of thinking.

Yes, I do. Elsewhise the striker spring pulls the bolt lugs back against the abutments and wipes the grease off.

OTOH, it can't possibly make a measurable difference. Good grease doesn't wipe off so easily.

Always, but it is primarily to relax the firing pin spring as opposed to dry firing the rifle. Use Lucas Red and Tacky grease on the lugs, seems to stay put on the bolt lugs.

I use a snap cap when dry firing for practice except in prep time on the line.

Thanks for the replies. I've always wondered if it was a waste of time. I'll keep doing since it doesn't hurt anything.

I'm going to try the Lucas Red and Tacky stuff I keep hearing about. My favorite bolt grease so far has been shooters choice all weather.

I didn't use to, until I watched Greg's video. There is a noticeable difference in the grease on the lugs if you do hold the trigger back.

It does feel like you can push the lugslook farther forward. I can't remember where I learned it but it was probably from Greg video too.

What about as youre loading the chamber getting ready to shoot? The grease is there to keep the lugs from galling after the shot when the pressure hits it, not for storage purposes

What are you referring to? I'm not understanding.

Are you saying don't leave grease on the lugs for storage?

I lube and pull the trigger..... but also clean the lug recesses on a semi regular basis. Made a matched pair of carbon fiber "short" cleaning rods with 8-32 inserts. One uses a shotgun brush for the chamber, the other has a slotted tip that thick felt gets put into.... which fits the lug recesses. Sinclair sells them,I just prefer the figured walnut/CF,otherwise they're the same as commercial offerings.

Good luck with your project.

Sure you can leave it there but we dont put grease on lugs for storage. Its on there for firing so whats the point in figuring out how to put it on there for storage? Im not worried about my lugs rusting and itll collect dust. All i want grease for is to keep the lugs from galling after firing so theres no need in trying to figure out how to put it on there without loading it right?

Oh okay, I didn't mean that it was for storage, just that it might be a better way of greasing the abutments.

But as soon as you close the bolt on a loaded round its back to normal. Thats what im trying to say- dont worry about how to grease the lugs unloaded, loaded is the only thing that matters
