Grease on the lug?

I hate to admit this but after reading some posts on lug galling I think I should ask. I have been cleaning my bolt lugs and adding light oil, But after some post about galling I think I should evaluate this approach. Is it necessary to grease your lugs? What is the best grease for the job? You may think this is a dumb question but I was kinda thinking grease would collect unwanted junk.

Most of the point-blank BR shooters that I know use grease. Everyone has a preference and I'm not aware of any "bad" ones. Sinclair (and others) list several brands. I personally like the Pro Gold which is a soft consistency and goes on easily.

Every time I clean the gun, I use a chamber mop and a lug recess cleaning tool. Plus I wipe the bolt down, apply a rub on a couple drops of light oil, and grease the lugs and all cam surfaces every time before I reinsert the bolt. Even when I don't clean between relays, I put a small dot of grease on the lugs before the bolt goes in.

I may be a little fanatical about it, but my BAT and Borden actions are works of art and I intend to do everything I can to keep them pristine.

Grease, not oil (on bolt actions, not AR-type gas guns!).

Use not too much, pretty much anything you can lay your hands on.

My personal choice is a white synthetic product, comes in a small plastic syringe with a nozzle that twists 180* to act as a valve. (Not sure what brand, stuff's still packed from the big move; been too busy getting settled in to do any shooting).

Wipe lugs & body during cleaning, use the cylindrical cotton 'plugs' for cleaning lugs inside the action.

When you apply fresh grease & insert the bolt, hold the trigger down when closing the bolt the first couple times. This helps keep grease in place on the lugs when they slide into place.

Permatex Anti Seize you can get at any auto parts store.Supposed to be good to two thousand degrees.I have a bat m action that I ran up to about 80k on pressure by accident with out a problem and have been using this product on that action for 7 years.

How many folks use Permatex Anti Seize?

On barrel threads, yes. Considering how hard it is to get off once it's in place, on bolt lugs (more important, on the lugs inside my actions) I'd think it would tend to trap debris over time.

There's overlapping uses for some products but where lubes are involved, with the selection we have why use something that's not designed for the purpose?

Kind of an extension of a 'use the right tool for the job' philosophy.

raythemanroe,

I use Permatex Anti Seize on barrel threads, too damn messy for a bolt. I use High speed grease ( red) for the bolt. Get a tube at auto parts store, and get a small plastic syringe, you are good for years.

I have been using TM bolt grease and it does its job. I have a couple of Bat actions and have not experienced any galling issues. On most custom actions the tolerances are tight (or should be) its what you pay that premium for. So I clean the lugs and action on a regular basis, put a light coat of bolt magic on the bolt body and grease the lugs and cocking cam. I like to put some forward pressure on the bolt the first time I close it. If you don't have one K&M makes a great action cleaning tool.

ProGold in the syringe is what I use too. I also share Reed's overall point of view on bolt maintenance. Previous to the ProGold I was using some specialized engine assembly lube that was dispensed with a glue syringe that came from a woodworking supplier, see bottom picture.

Since any good grease would do it seemed like a good antidote for cabin fever to explore other products and discriminate bolt greases with different criteria.

So far these are my findings:

Best smelling grease: see first picture

Best color grease: see second picture

Most comfortable grease: (note; not recommended for steel bolts)

Is this something that should be done to all bolt actions? The reason I ask is I am just getting into F/TR shooting and will be using an old Musgrave and am wondering if I should grease the lugs.

Thanks

I have some of THE best crap you can use. Pm me if interested and send me a small vial and I'll mail you some if interested to try. I use it in bolt and semi autos summer to winter
