Last year my oldest son got married and I gained my first grandchild which was certainly fine with me. Skipped the diaper stage so that was even better and went directly to the hunter safety stage. We have a late doe season in Michigan so it was the perfect opportunity to get him out without any additional pressure from others hunting the area. My plan was to get a deer within 50-75 yards for his first attempt but the deer had other ideas and weren't co-operating at all. Very mild winter really killed deer movement during daylight hours this year. The 2nd day we finally got an opportunity at a large doe at about 125 yds. I had him practicing the day before holding on deer at 200+ yds with an empty chamber so he could try some trigger squeezes on real game instead of targets. He showed exceptional breath/trigger control so I turned him loose on this deer when we got a slight quartering away shot. The shot placement was excellent, about 6" above the "elbow" with the bullet dead heading against the opposite shoulder. Took out both lungs with massive damage. The deer made it about 60 yds before it went down so we had a little bit of practice tracking a deer.
He was using a 7.62x39 in a mini-mauser action shooting 110 gr Barnes TTSX over H4198. Shorten carbine for a young person and very accurate. He was almost as pumped as I was.
