government shutdown and gun sales

are gun sales affected? I have an action on order through a gunsmith and he says nothing is going to happen anytime soon because of the shutdown? can manufacturers not issue serial numbers or?
Thanks
Mark

I don't think gun sales will be affected, NICS is maintained and implemented by the FBI and it is Federal. It is also the "National Instant Criminal Background check System" meaning it handles all background checks for federal law enforcement. It is deemed "Essential" and I believe should be available.

Don't know but, it sounds like your gunsmith is not right. RDA72927 is correct that the FBI implements the system and past shutdowns have not affected the system. NICS does way more than checks on firearm purchases.

Do other states do this as well? In Mississippi if you can show a valid firearms ccl then the ffl doesn’t call they just note the number on your card.

In answer to the last part of your question, the Manufacturer has a system set up, approved by BATFE, to assign and track all SN. They do not need to get prior approval before stamping a SN on your action.

A bit off topic, but worth noting that not everyone in Washington is on a paid vacation:

I work in a gun store and we haven't seen any problem what so ever with processing background checks. Having worked for the Federal Government for most of my adult life I can say very honestly that the so-called "shutdown" is mostly BS. Over the years the bureaucrats have changed the rules of operation by creating "special" categories for themselves and these special categories allow them to stay operational even during a shutdown. If you do your research you'll find that most of the Federal agencies had their budgets approved back in August through October and they aren't effected by this shutdown in any way. Of those who are loosing pay most are part-time or contract workers who were warned when they were hired that their jobs exist at the whim of the government and that they can be terminated at a moment's notice.

The truth is that the Federal Government does very little that impacts the average citizen to any great degree - they are fairly useless and the bureaucrats just don't want us to recognize just how many of them could be fired without having any substantial negative effect on the public.

I work with a guy who has an FFL. I just asked him about this yesterday. According to him, background checks for firearms sales have not been affected, however he also said no progress is being made on any paperwork required for suppressor sales. He has 4 pending sales as of yesterday.

Mn carry permit no longer acceptable, Mn was issuing without driver's license, so the Fed's require call in for concealed permit holders. Probably found Mn issued ccp to illegals. My form 4 was approved Dec 21, dealer called Jan 8. So they are at least mailing out.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there are a ton of USCG guys and gals out there working hard to keep our waters safe and they are not getting paid! They are serving us and their country and have to show up to work everyday and are not getting paid.

The Land Between the Lakes Shooting Range in KY is according
to the posted signage is under the dept of Agriculture which is shut down. Range cleanup is every wed when everything is on schedule. Due to the shut down no cleanup has been performed.
In a short period of time the public has absolutely TRASHED the range. Signage says pack it in, pack it out, no explosive or skeet targets, which would also mean no shotguns. The ground is littered w/broken clays, shotgun shells and cardboard boxes of all sizes that have been used for targets and left behind. IMHO
some people will not take care of anything, because it not theirs.
