Got Scammed

Solid advice. Thank you.
My pleasure. Also, if you are in the market for a great bullet for that 6.5G, check out the Cavity Back MKZ. A lot of hype on the website that a lot of people don't agree with, but their bullets perform amazingly at the velocities that the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, and 7.62X39 give. About the same price as the ABLR now days as well.

Receiving you're most likely OK but you can get hosed sending a money order too.
You can pretty much get hosed sending any type of payment . Personal check might be the safest as you have half a chance to stop payment. Sellers always require payment before they cut loose with the goods. All we can do is check them out best we can before cutting the deal.

My thoughts exactly.

What’s the old saying, “a lock keeps the honest people honest”.
A crook will work harder and longer, stealing something than what an actual job would require.

I pay by credit card or PayPal (then I pay PP by cc). If it's a scam I can then contest the charge.
contest and win are two different animals, unfortunately. i got bit a year or so ago with the chinese fake shipping scam and now both pp and my (at the time) cc provider are history in my world.

Personally, I don't expect to "win".
The money is gone. I know that. I'll contest it simply to hopefully shut that account down. If mine is collateral damage, so be it.

Regarding custom photos -- it is NOT enough to ask for a paper with your name and date on it. The scammer can use photoshop to fake that. You need to get the seller to put the item in a unique place, with a different orientation and background. Say, for example, ask the seller to take the scope and put in on top of a hat on a chair, with a shoestring tied around it. Or have the bullet boxes put inside a salad bowl with a piece of fruit.

Make sure the seller cannot simply re-use an image found on the web. Force them to take a completely new image that can't be faked.

I'm sorry we have to go through this, but the scammers are getting more clever.

Frankly, I encourage folks to purchase optics new, from a long-established, respected company.

Use a normal credit card whenever possible. Don't buy with Zelle, Venmo, PayPal F&F or BITCOIN!! You will have no recourse in the event of fraud or non-delivery.

I'd love it if we all wrote a Wiki about this. I sold my buddy a scope, and his wife bought him a scope, and now he doesn't need either. The one his wife bought him is BNIB (don't get me started, at least she knows what his hobbies are). I was thinking of selling them for him here (once I have physical possession).

I'd love to see a Wiki, that also includes info on how to simultaneously protect the buyer, AND seller. I had planned on posting lots of custom photos, with a card with my Username on it in every photo, but Forum Boss says that's not good enough. I'm certainly not going to accept Zelle/Venmo/Paypay. Fuck those companies.

I've always paid with a check my bank sends, since it has to be legit. I figured that's what I'd accept as well? I don't want somebody cancelling a check on me.
