Gordens reloading tool vs Quickload

I’ve used GRT for years, after using QL for years prior. I no longer have QL installed and haven’t paid for a data update in ages. Gordon is great to talk to, as well. It’s also relatively easy to do your own cartridge designs, and true up your models.

I found GRT recently. I have to say it's excellent and not well-known to many. Gordon keep his software update regularly and it's been great to play with it to find OBT and max pressure prior to in the field testing. If you follow his process, it's really accurate in getting you close to that perfect load.

For those that want to help expand the library of powders in GRT, here is how you can help

"In order to create a powder file in GRT you will need to run a 2x2x2x5 powder development run. That is 2 calibers, with 2 bullets weights each caliber, with 2 powder charge weights each bullet weight (max and start), five shots. That is 20 shots each caliber. Shoot these loads over a good chronograph like a MagnetoSpeed or LabRadar. The chronos like a ProChrono are not accurate enough for this use. Then you use GRT to make a .grtload file for each caliber (2 files), so 4 files. Name the files properly so it is easy to tell the caliber, bullet, and powder from the file name. It is most important that you measure the fired case interior volume in grains of water (brimfull level (ever so slightly convex) and enter that into the .grtload file. You also have to measure the length of your lot of bullets, and enter that as well, and the cartridge OAL. If the bullet chosen makes the OAL vary a bit, use the average length. See the pictures I add to this thread."

"Add a Measurement Tab to each caliber file to document the results of your test firing. There are many options for data import from chronographs if you so desire."

"Also include any notes that you think may be useful to Gordon, put those is a separate Note Tab. The once you have the 4 files complete, just send them into data@grtools.de with a subject like like IMR 7828 SSC Powder Workup. There should have been a Measurement file included in you GRT download, use that for reference. This hard work will start a powder file, and any other firing data submitted will help Gordon to fine tune the model. Once Gordon is satisfied the model looks viable he will send it to you, and with enough data he will add it to the next GRT release. Sounds like a lot of work, but GRT is free, so the user has to pay something if he wants something to work. Those users that are GRT Patreons also receive the newest propellant models more frequently than the free users. However, the frequency of model updates are directly related to the amount of data Gordon receives."

Or make it full of errors. I don't use GRT but could you trust crowdsource coding/data provision? Can you really depend on what others input to be correct? Who is to say whoever measures a case did not have a off batch or bullets different from spec. With QL there is only 2 sources the company and yourself. You can make all of the changes mentioned in QL. I do so on a regular basis.

I work in biomedical research and the garbage coming in never ceases to amaze me. You can hardly ever get 2 exactly the same medical opinions. It is flat scary. Why training, so many ways to skin a cat, and sites flat out don't care and submit crap. Not to mention it is all about money.

1 other thing comes to mind as i think about this.

When i had only 1 reloading manual you trust it.
Then when you get a second and start comparing and see different load data for the same components and you begin to think which is right. then get 3 and so on. They are all just references not empirical resources.
Same here if you have QL only, then you will trust it. Now add in GRT then as has been mentioned which is right. Throw in the books and it gets more complicated. Now add in any Jo blow sending data to be included even worse.

One thing about the powder profiles, the data is crowdsourced, but it does not go live until there is sufficient data that has been received and verified by the developer, which is why I posted the method for getting powder profiles added.

I'd like to make a request to anyone using RL23 if they have data as outlined above, I'd like to use it to generate a powder profile as it is currently not available on the latest version of GRT.

I have data from my 260AI, but per instructions two calibers (diameters) with two bullet weights are needed.

If you shoot something other than a 6.5, use RL23 and possibly have min-max data over 5 rounds with two bullet weights, I would be interested in seeing your data. PM is fine if you are not comfortable posting it publicly.

I'm thinking maybe some of you 284win shooters might have this data.

I can't seem to figure out how to even register with Gordon's.
I get to this part of signing in and...

What is the abbrevation / "for short" of Gordons Reloading Tool?

I've tried grt, grtools ,SA etc. anything I could think of.

Sorry, but the CAPTCHA wasn't answered correctly. Maybe you're not human at all?

Maybe not. What's the secret answer? I'd like to try it. If I were human and all.

I think it is GRT in all caps

It's a big file.
Saying 100 MB 15 min to download at my speed
Yes, and its a zip file that needs to be extracted after download as well. If you find any missing data for bullets, etc you may need, please post here and we'll try to get you the data to enter your own.

I just finished building cartridges and chambers for my 260AI and a friends 6.5x55AI, also adding the Berger 156EOL to my bullet library. The new Cartridge Designer feature is pretty nice to have! The calculated data is pretty darn close for both chamberings to measured velocity, well within powder lot/temp and other variations.

Still stumped. Downloaded the zip file three different times, but when I go to extract it says compressed zipped folder empty. Yet it has over 51k of data showing. I'm not the sharpest 'puter whiz and this one has me. I can read the files, read the instructions, but when I try to do it I get an error. It seems I have an extraction problem of some kind, probably the operator.

I'm going to remove everything I've downloaded and try again. This isn't working for some reason on my machine. I want to try GRT if I can get it to work. pm help appreciated. Thanks.

Are you downloading the correct version? It works only on windows or Linux. I can try to help you via PM if you still need.

I've downloaded the manual, perused it , start pressure for regular cup/core bullets is 250 bar or 3625 psi. This is the same as QL.

In QL this start pressure, 3625 psi, represents 0.247" off the rifling.

What is the mechanism to reconcile the start pressure in GRT ?

Why don't you go to the actual support channel (Discord) for GRT and ask there?
I did. There must have been something wrong with my download last night. This time went faster with more files. Last time I didn't even have the license agreement. So it's all working now. Thanks for the help.
