Good Rimfire Gunsmith’s...

I live in southern New Mexico. There is no one out here I really trust to know what they’re doing. I’ve found out the hard way. I’d like to find someone to lighten the triggers on my Kimber 82G. Any one have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

The Kimber 82 trigger is not a particularly interesting unit. Microabrasive and time, in hands of decent skill + resetting of the trigger weight a little lower, and it can be a very nice unit as-is.

Mine was set to about 1 lb, with a short roll of almost imperceptibly smooth movement, and no backstop.

I did that one, and I was very proud of what 3 hours work with glass sheets and 3M’s best papers could do. 1 micron surface finish, in the direction of travel...well, that can make a relative lot of weight seem pretty trivial.

I would happily do it for you, but it requires that I have the entire barreled action, and I sold mine.

Thanks, I knew 1 Lb or so is doable but was actually hoping to get it down to a few ounces. That’s more than I’m capable of doing. There was a guy on rimfire central a few years back that was doing it and getting it down to around 2 oz or so, but apparently he went on to have some issues. I think it got really bad to the point where People sent him guns and or cash and couldn’t get them back, etc.

If I can’t find someone to do it I’ll certainly keep you in mind. Much appreciated...

You could try

Brian Voelker is top notch. I’ve dealt with him before but I know he’s mostly a Remington guy. I called him a few weeks ago for work on my CZ Precision Trainer and he wouldn’t do it, so I’m not sure if he’ll want to work on a Kimber. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to ask, thanks...

yeah... it never hurts to ask..

Triggers are a lot like many other things; they all have design limitations. Trying to get in the low ounces with an issue 82 trigger is just not feasible -- the design limits what is possible. Many medium grade target rifles that have pretty good potential are limited by their triggers in many cases. Win. 75, Rem. 513T, Mossberg 44/144, Savage 19, Stevens 416, Rem. 540/541X are all good examples. Not many custom trigger manufacturers have developed better triggers for lack of potential sales. They know that not many people will pay much money for a trigger for an inexpensive target rifle. While the above custom trigger seems high, consider buying a new trigger for an Anschutz, Walther or other high quality European .22 target rifle. Light target triggers are much more reasonable for the 40X/700 rifles and those that will take the same trigger (many custom centerfires) and is a result of a high volume market and competition for that market. Even in that market, you'll pay a lot for the very best, such as the Bix & Andy @ $395 and up. At least now there is an option for a light trigger for Kimber 82 owners.

A Kimber 82G is what it is. If you want to make one into an Anschutz, Walther, etc. then you better be into it for free because in the long run the $$$ you spend will make a real target rifle look cheap.

I didn't say I wanted to make it into and Anschutz. I said I was hoping to find someone who could lighten the trigger. Two very different things. It does already shoot right up there with some Anschutz rifles. I just got back from a match about an hour ago where I tied for second place with it, and took first with its identical twin last month at a 200 meter match. Today’s went to 115 meters.

I would have won this one too if I hadn’t been an idiot and gone the opposite way with my scope adjustments from what I had intended. But it’s all part of the fun.

In total defense of John's post (VLNBYR), he and myself, are RFBR shooters. We both deal in different triggers than some that post here. Sub 1oz triggers dominate our game, shot at 50 yards/meters. I am certain he did not know the game you play. A stock Anschutz would get murdered at the matches we shoot, even with a tricked out trigger. Same with a Kimber 82G being stock, even with a souped up trigger. Apples to Oranges.

Not everyone shoots the same game here.

To answer your original question, I know Brian Voelker personally. Have no idea if he will take on the job. Your expectations on what your trigger is capable of may restrict your choices. I also have had work done by John Langley, but it was just a re-barrel. I do know he does a bunch of different triggers, but not sure about Kimber. My final smith in this conversation would be Mark Penrod, which I also know personally. I am very experienced with his work, both RFBR and center fire. Mark is NOT cheap, nor is his lead time short. He does do excellent work though. I do not know if he will do trigger work on a Kimber.

You need to weigh your needs, cost, and the engineering of the Kimber trigger to make a good choice. I have and will, give work to anyone of the three smiths I have mentioned. As far as Kimber goes, you need to contact them, as I have no experience with Kimber and these smiths in relation to Kimber, nor will I in the future.

As far as the post that MAY have given an indication you could buy a Bix n Andy for your Kimber, I don't know about that. I am thinking that could be wrong, but again I have no experience with Kimber.

That’s all well and good, and I’m not trying to be difficult but I fail to see what any of that has to do with my question? I just asked if anyone knew of someone who can lighten the trigger down to a few ounces? I never said I intended to compete in the nationals. I shoot benchrest silhouette with it. If I wanted to go to Chickenfoot I’d take my old Voelker built 40x. This is my 200 yard Benchrest silhouette gun.

And yes you are exactly right. Not everyone shoots the same game here...

Precisionwelding01 is Howard related to Gene Pitts? Gene used to run the Manatee range in Florida and I have seen him with some with some impressive scores and high finishes at Camp Perry.

I did in fact exactly answer your question. Please read my post again. Pick it up where I said "to answer your original question".

You asked about gun smiths and I gave you 3 smiths I trust without question. You said you did not have any in your area you trusted. I gave you 3 smiths I explicitly trust from them taking my money for the work they have done for me which was impeccable. That includes two full custom rifle builds.

I also explained I did not know what their interest/willingness in a Kimber trigger job was. I told you that you would have to contact them. I never implied that you were intending to shoot the Nationals and could care less about your Voelker 40X. I had no idea from your post about what your intentions were about your Kimber. I gave information you asked for. I think you should appreciate the info on trusted smiths from a person that has experience with them that you were given and asked for, no matter the different types of shooting being done. If you don't think I answered your question......re-read my first post. Your snotty reply has you on my ignore list. Later......much later!
