Good old .308

Thinking about going back to the good old 308 and 30" bull barrel and a good muzzle brake shooting 200.20 grain burgers at around 2600 or 2650 muzzle velocity also thinking of using IMR 4064 or some other power that someone could suggest.

I love the 6.5 by 284 Norma but you know 800/1000 rounds you have to change Barrel. That's why I think I will get a 308 30" 1in 10 T bull

I had one of those stock milspec stainless steel 5r Remington 700 24-inch Barrel it did extremely well with 155 grain Lapuas moly coated at 2920 muzzle velocity with IMR 4064 Lapua brass CCI benchrest primers.
It was a 1 -11.25 twist it also shot Sierra matchking 175 grain at 2750 muzzle velocity with extreme accuracy they would Keyhole at 2650 muzzle velocity at 1000-yard so I had to bump it up to 2750 and it did pretty good that's why I'm thinking going 30" 1in10 T and using 200.20 grain burgers thoughts? O it will be on a Remington 700 action kind of worried if 30 inch with a muzzle brake would put too much stress on the Remington 700 action help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time

I've been putting a lil thought into this lately myself.
I shoot a 06' with 185-200 gr bullets, but cant help noticing that the .284 bullets have better
BC's than the .308 bullets.
I'm leaning more towards the .284, but like you I need thoughts from other shooters.

The action by Remington will handle it all day long, every day

I love my 308, but agree completely with this! I’m thinking my next hunting rifle will be a 7mm something?? Maybe a 284 or a 280AI. But the 308 ain’t going anywhere!!

I like the 308 also, but, as posted above, it's hard not to look at those 7mm bullets. I went with a 7mm-08 and really like it. I also hunt with a 280AI. Some of the new powders, if you can get your hands on them are fantastic too.

What discipline, if you are thinking F class the brake is not allowed.

What discipline are you shooting?

Nothing wrong with the .308 at all.

I shoot on private land me and a few others been doing it for 20 years we shoot 400 433 500 600 800 833 950 1005 yards 22 inch by 18 inch steel targets Harris bipod and rear sandbag sometimes off of bench and sometimes we play sniper hahaha. Would be fun to buy one of those FTR Target's I think you call them and see what could be done at a thousand yards after shooting a few sighters

Yes the straight 284 has done very well. 280 AI looks promising also. But the 308 is so easy to load for and I already have the dies and components. And there's not much wind in Ohio where I live.

Forgot to mention the action is a single shot so is it stronger

don’t over look the 185 juggernaut!!

I'm a 284 fan regardless if it's the 6.5/284 or straight 284. It works for everything I hunt these days pretty much. This year I will be switching gears also for the .308. I'm going a little different direction tho. I chopped down a 26" barrel to 22". Switched from 168/175s down to 150s in the Sierra Game King SBT. Running them around 2800 fps. Groups are good. Recoil is nothing and it's short. I'll be in a tree so it'll be nice and short for treestand use. I'll add this also since I've spoke on it in other threads. I haven't killed yet with my new 338 LM Improved build. It'll be accompanying me during this years deer season on my 2 week hunt. I'll take it out after my first kill with the .308. I'll fill my second buck tag with it if I have the opportunity. The 230 ELD-X will be what I use. I can't see using a 285/300 grain bullet in a 100+/- yard whitetail kill when the 230 seems about perfect for the job from the .338. If I had some acreage(1000+ yards) to stretch out the lapua, I'd definitely use the heavier 285+

For some reason I can’t leave it either. You think about all those fancy rounds that have come out, boasting this or that, but sometimes simple is ok. We get so wrapped around the complexities. I guess my mindset is different than most, but it does everything I need it to.

What I love about the 308, is it’s so easy to load for! You have wide selections of powder and components that will work with it.

The .308 is something I hate to love - it's those fat lower velocity bullets but they seem to go thru the same hole and kill a variety of game real good up to 400 yards.

Well said. Let me add to that. A buddy only had a 308. He was headed to WY to hunt antelope. I loaded up some 155s at around 2975 fps. Accuracy was as you said, same hole groups. He's killed numerous Goats with that combo since then. In the case of the .308 with the mid-weight bullets speed also kills. BCs not the greatest but he killed a few beyond 700 yards with that load. Don't think he'll be building any 6/6.5s. He's very happy with his trusty .308.

Remington 700 with a criterion remage barrel. I talked my best friend into a long action Remington 700 and a criterion 1-8" twist .308 F-TR chamber (load bullets out long and still feed from mag). He absolutely loves that thing. Crazy thing is, it shoots 165 Sierra game changers extremely well in that 8" twist
