Good Mauser 98 trigger?

I'm redoing an Interarms Mark X and am looking for a nice adjustable trigger with a side safety. The Timney #301 looks to be a good one but not being real fluent in the commercial 98's, are there any others I should consider? Side safety is a must.

Thanks! -Al

First, I believe the very best Mauser trigger is Mauser's original trigger. Direct connect, two stage, indestructible. With that out of the way, I have triggers from Timney, Sako, Dayton-Traister, Bold, and Canjar. Of them all, the Canjar is the best (though unavailable), but the Timney is second. Timney's safety is better, though all side safeties suck just a little. WH

I have a Timney trigger in a Swedish Mauser sporter and it works great as a light hunting trigger (about 3 lbs.). I just installed a Dayton Treister trigger I had lying around in a friends Yugoslav Mauser. Fantastic trigger, but no side safety on these. It's a shame they don't because I think it is a better trigger than the Timney and will fit a military stock without modification.

When we were building M98 Custom Mausers,we would generally use either:

Kepplinger single set, Dressel (Paul), or Blackburn. All of these will have to be sourced on the secondary market. Most of these were used on Mausers with 3-position safeties on the bolt.

There is an Interarms on ebay:

I bought out all the Kepplingers when they closed but those are long gone in builds or with other builders.

Some of the Guild Gunsmiths might be able to help locate a quality trigger for your project.

Best of Luck!

I went with a CG X-Treme 2-stage without safety (I have a Buehler wing safety on the bolt). Unfortunately it wasn't distributed in the US - I had to buy it from CG in the UK, but it was an easy process. It is a very good trigger and fully adjustable.

For what it's worth, you can also get the adjustable trigger on a part-by-part basis from Zastava. I priced all the parts not long ago and it was a bit over $140. At that time, they had everything in stock.

Gary @hdskip came through and gratiously sent me this. Turns out it was a new trigger that Gary had in a drawer for years. I disassembled it, gave it a good soak in mineral spirits to remove the original protectant that was still on it, polished the inside of the trigger sides with 400 and lightly stoned and polished the sear engagement surfaces. Installed on the action, it's around 26 oz. with plenty of sear engagement.

Thanks again, Gary! :) -Al
