Good Chrono under $200?

ProChrono has served me well for over 10 years. Simple intuitive program, no impact on barrel harmonics.

I have a ProChrono with the bluetooth adapter and light kit and like it a lot. I use it with a tablet and as others have mentioned you can save or e mail the strings, it even audibly announces the velocity.

The way to get around any accuracy issues surrounding the the magnetospeed is to develope your accruacy load with out it. Then use the chrono to get your muzzle veclocity.

Or do a speed ladder finding your flat spot of veclocity vs powder charge, then fine tune with seating depth for accuracy without the magneto speed. Then once your have your load, check muzzle velocity.

Shooting Chrony user for 30 years give or take.
I shoot SR .Match Rifle ,Palma and F/Class = Lots of testing .

I have shot one or two over the years. Send them back to the Factory a few dollars and get a up-dated on.
I have posted before ! Tested side by side with a 35 little to No difference .

I think my first one was $40 ???

I have had the same Pro Chrono for nearly 40 years. It has cardboard sky screens. Back then, if you shot it, they would rebuild it for $25, or so. I never shot it! lol They are still inexpensive.

I used a ProChrono for a number of years and it worked fine, sold it and bought the latest MagnetoSpeed, really works well, having the data all on a chip is slick, calculates SD, ES and everything else on the fly. Very pleased with it.

I used a Pro Chrono for many years and it never missed a shot. Lately my eyes aren't up to snuff trying to read the screen so I ordered a Pro Chrono with blue tooth so now I get the speeds at my bench on my phone in BIG numbers. One thing I wasn't aware of is that the thing also tells you in audio female voice the speed each shot. So far it hasn't missed a shot and doesn't ever mess up my groups like the ones hanging off the barrel. Set it up about 10 feet out and start shooting. You get AV speed, ES, SD, all the shots recorded etc etc. This new one is about $130.00 most places and worth it. HB

Funny, I haven't noticed any shift in impact with mine.. But I always hear people who don't have em complain.

I haven't either, you typically see those results from thinner barrels or from guys who just say that.

But I have never noticed any shift but then again i am not doing my accuracy testing with it on.

My method is

Find a velocity flat spot
Tune seating depth
Get a velocity
True at distance 800+ yards

This is the approach I use for the most part. But, in my case, I haven't found much of a change (if any) in the size of my groups when my MagnetoSpeed is attached or not. The big difference is that my POI's are about 2.5" high @ 100 yds when it's attached.

Just the other day I was shooting some nice groups with my .308 (in the 3's) and I decided to mount my MagnetoSpeed to verify my MV was what I thought it was. It was my last set as I was ready to leave the range for the day. Four shots into a bug hole, and I messed up on my mechanics with the 5th where it landed just outside of the hole. So, I decided to take 2 more shots at the same POA and they both went into the same bug hole (huge smile on my face then) . . . making me feel real good when I left the range. When I got home I measured the bug hole (not including that one "flyer" error) and it was .218" for 6 shots. Not bad for a .308 with MagnetoSpeed hanging on the end of a 24" heavy sporter, huh? But yeah, I wish I could do that consistently, even without the MagnetoSpeed. ;) It was a good day at the range.

For the sake of future load development, I have decided to invest in a new chronograph. I don't want junk, but I set my budget limit at $200. Any recommendations?
I had and liked Magnetospeed Sporter before I splurged on a LabRadar. It worked great. So plus one for the MS Sporter.

Looks like a suppressor with the weight being similar to the MS bayo might be what you need

I have the spotter and have used a friend’s V3 to check and compare.

on my sporter barrels, there is a Significant POI change, like inches.

on varmint weight or heavier, I have noticed nothing.

I have been using the “long range load development at 100 yards” method for several years now. It works perfectly, zero complaints. I don’t even bother to check velocity until my load is developed, as it’s a secondary concern for me, but my SD is always exceptional.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'm going to get the Magnetospeed. However, I found some Varget today, so I think I'll wait until next paycheck.

If you need a drop test prior to that

Zero at 100 yards
Then move to 300 or 400 yards
Measure the drop in inches from your 100 yard zero

This will provide a good indicator of speed.

I have a Chrony Beta and Magneto Speed. The MagnetoSpeed is small and convenient to install and use. POI shift difference (with and without) will depend on barrel thickness. On my straight contour barrel, the shift is insignificant. In the end, you'll be using the chronograph to gather velocity data. To be specific, you'll be using it to identify which loads you've developed have a low SD/ES's. I found that group size was similar with or without the MagnetoSpeed attached to the barrel, even on my thinner barreled rifles.
