Going 30 cal

I am gonna build me a new hunting gun. I found a 300 win savage 110 that I am gonna use as the start. I have never played much with the 30's so what I was thinking was: Get action timmed, put it in a lightweight thumbhole and barrel it in 30-338??? I would like to keep the gun under 10lbs and I will probably shoot her from the bench a little but the main purpose would be to hunt. I welcome any suggestions as this is the first NONE bench gun I am building.

I rebarelled a Sendero last year with a Krieger barrel in 300 RUM. It shoots 1.5 to 2.0 inches three-shot groups at 520 yards. Berger 210 VLDs at 3,200 FPS. I'm very pleased with it, and as long as you don't mind a 12.5 pound hunting rifle I think you would like it too.

If you get it timed per se,send it to kevin rayhill as he has treated me extremely well.He does these actions everyday. He will tell you some good choices for your build.Personally I would go with the .300 wsm.I have a friend who has it chambered in a model 70 winchester,he killed a whitetail at 555 yds and it dropped.Sounds good to me.

the RUM does have my attention. Just don't know if I can take the beating and still shoot well.

I have a brake made and installed by Danny Huffman from North Carolina, and it's not bad on the shoulder, but I would not be interested in shooting it without the brake.

whats wrong with the 300 win mag? just curious??? ???
It has a stock barrel 300win at the moment and I would rebarrel it no matter as I want a heavier and better barrel. Also I just am not a big 300 win fan if this was a short action gun 300WSM would be my pic since it's a long 30-338 and 300 ultra are the two that have my attention for now at least.

Your cal. choice is confusing...how will a 30-.338 be better than a 300 win.? its a good cal choice but the case holds prolly 5 gr less powder and you gota make em out of .338 which are hard to find or 7mm mags. ...I have shot em in the past with good results but would go some other way in this day and age.....it is a good "wildcat" for your first attempt at case forming etc...Roger
PS...the weak part about and ultra mag is Remington brass!!!

Yes the ultra mag hold up for me is purely brass. I was figuring on using the 7mm to make the 30-338, but nothing is in stone. To be honest nothing is wrong with the 300win I just like to be a little different thats all. I am open to suggestions.

If you want to be different, see if Huntingtons still has some 8X68RWS brass and make something like a BooBoo with that. About the same capacity as a 300WinMag but very tough stuff.

I know the .300 Win Mag receives a lot of brad press because of the banded cases and recoil, but to me it is more than powerful enough to shoot to 1000 without stretching the trajectory to extremes. I guess I just don't like messing with the super-magnums for the diminishing returns :-[, but they are indeed returns ;) I use to shoot 30-378 and I always found myself flinging 220s with my WM.

I've shot my WM with big matchkings vs a 7rum Sendero with Bergs at 940 and it did a bit more than hold its own. We were holding about the same for wind but my vertical was way more consistent. Not to say you cannot get great vertical out of a super-mag.

Just my $0.02

Now that is an idea. Any thoughts about the lazzoroni family??? the 308 warbird looks interesting but I have never seen one or talked with anyone who has one.

Even tho the brass may be a problem. I've said in the past if I was going to build another magnum, it would be a .338 Edge. My biggest .30 cal I've owned and still do is a .300 Lapua, it's a Hoss, just never shoot it since I built my 7rsaum. The .300 is a Bench rifle with a 34" in Lilja, Gre-Tan built it.

What about a .300 ackley???
I do have an ackley fetish!!! I have a 22-250AI and a 243AI. I just don't know I think I might just put them all in a hat and pull one and live with it. lol

On a push feed , you can really chamber it to anything you want including a 300 WSM. The BIG deal in a hunting rifle is not only having performance but being able to shoot in accurately without cringing from the oncoming recoil & blast. Any of the 300's will have more performace with handloads than you will need so it's really more of a recoil issue & how tolerant you are. Grains of powder = pounds of recoil.

What do you intend to hunt and under what conditions? Any of the 300 Mag variations are not that much different in killing power. You shoot big heavy .308 bullets 3000-3200fps give or take a little. The animal cannot tell any difference between 200-300fps at muzzle, less at impact range. If you want more killing power go up to .338. Then you have stepped up to a different level. Hold .308 and .338 bullets in you hand with equal sectional densities and you will see the difference.
Killing is accomplished by putting a well constructed bullet in a vital area. If you fail to do that, your choice of bullet, caliber, etc. isn't that important.
Get an accurate rifle that fits you and work up a load with a good hunting bullet designed for the game you hunt. Bill

I got a couple of interesting ideas. 308 Norma for the simple fix. And, if you really want to do something on the edge, how about a..............30 Newton!!! Then there is the 308 Baer, 300 Dakota, etc.................Lot's of good options in the 30's. It's just a matter of how extravagant, and expensive, you want to get. I'm going through some of the same gyrations right now.

I was seriously looking at a 300 Dakota before the advent of RL-17 which pretty much turned my table upside down. Now I can run a 300 WSM at about the same velocity with light bullets as a 300 Dakota with a whole lot less fuss. Also don't need to pay $2 a case.
