GM "TEC" carbon cleaner

I understand that GM “TEC” (Top Engine Cleaner) was really the cat’s meow for cleaning carbon deposits out of barrels. Unfortunately, it has apparently been discontinued. Figures ….. something that worked and they don’t sell it any more.

I have heard rumors of products that are essentially the same stuff but under a different name. Does anybody know of a product that is a replacement for the GM TEC? I understand it was by far and away THE best carbon cleaner on the market.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Thank you Gentlemen. As usual, great information feed back.

So (RONAKA) you say KG-1 is more or less the same stuff? I’ll look into that. Thanks my friend. By the way, how did you make out with your rifle from Savage?

X66P by GM is essentially the same stuff as the TEC? Sounds good. I’ll check with my GM dealership to see if they carry it.

Farmboy & Kenny474 – so Sea Foam is the same product? I have heard of that product. Do you have any idea who makes Sea Foam and/or where one could get it? I think I read somewhere it was made for marine outboard engines.

You can get Seafoam at any auto parts store for the most part. I know AutoZone carries it, but I am unsure if they are in your area.
It's not exactly the same formulation, but it does the same thing. I used it several times in the motor shop I worked in to remove carbon from different engine parts. Worked well.

The X66P is something new the ACDelco has put out to replace GMtec, I am unsure of how it works, though I have read several good reviews.

Don't know if KG-1 is the same stuff or not. Not sure how much luck you will have in getting it here in Canada. Have not seen it at Wholesale.

Not sure what GM is up to with the cleaner. Years ago they sold a product called Clens or something like that. My father who was a mechanic and owned a GM dealership swore by it for freeing up sticking valves. You poured about 1/3 can into the carburetor while giving it enough fuel to keep running, and then dumped the whole can to kill the engine. Let is sit for an hour, and then start (hopefully) the engine. I suspect it has nasty stuff in it, and either lawyers or environmental issues must be forcing them to change the constituents.

I just use Canadian Tire throttle body cleaner, but you have to watch it too, as it lifts paint. Possibly the fuel additives like STP would work too.

Yes, I finally got the Savage from Wholesale, and it is a long story that is not good for my blood pressure. Should get it out to the range in a couple of days. I like to epoxy bed the scope and bases, so that takes some time.

Ditto on the KG-1. I have used GM TEC for years and still have a few bottles left but have found that KG-1 does a better job getting the coal out of my barrels that I very seldom use the TEC anymore.
When using TEC I mix 4 parts TEC to 1 part Marvel Mystery Oil . Gives it a pinkish color. But if you can find KG-1 where you live get a bottle and don't look back.

I have been told Mercury power tune is the exact same stuffas TEC but it is in an aerosol, It is sold at boat dealerships.

I have used the old GM cleaner, KG1 and Evinrude engine tuner, but not really impressed with them. I am now trying Lucas auto engine treatment, bought at Auto Zone. They advertise carbon removal when added to the fuel tank. I brush it in the bore and let it there all night, seems to work well, altho two applications are needed on heavy deposits.
