Gentlemen, I present... the ".220 REDLINE"

Fredo,
Nearly 11K reads....tells me that either we are a bunch of speed freaks or none of us can drive past a crash without slowing! I cannot wait to put little P behind that thing and watch a hog drop. Updates please! It is snowing again here...I hate it.

P, prolly a combo of both :)

Gonna give McMillan a buzz today & check on the status of the stock. Should be close to done, and got the MarineTex ready to bed it up. If the barreled action beats the stock home, can drop the Redline into a different stock, if only to get some primers popped...finally!

Slow as it's going, will still have plenty of time to get a hellacious chuck round ready for Springtime.

Fred,
Not sure what your elevation is where you shoot but seeing how elevation has more of an effect on stabilization than velocity does, I think you can stabilize them 80-90s at 4000' plus elevation without pushing it too bad on speed. What's your thought ?

When he is in CNY he is at 1100 feet. Not sure what it is at his home...dang near in the ocean I think!

John,
yup ~100'ASL near home and ~1200 at the farm. Will likely do initial testing at home range, obvious benefit being that if bullets fly true @ 100'ASL, they'll fly anywhere...

As for "pushing", I didn't dream this sucker up to run on cruise control! It's gonna get a proper wringing out to learn just how far the .224 caliber envelope can be pushed  That said, it would be nice to see a less than 'ragged edge' load perform well enough to allow the benefits of a mild pressure load to be realized...

From a 27" barrel, I wanna see 3750+ from an 80gr, and crowding 3900 from a 75gr. And remember, this will be an 11lb. 'all up' walking rifle, not a 30" barreled rig that might eek another ~100fps out. Hopefully, the extra case capacity will compensate for the barrel length, and the above goals can be achieved :)

And speaking of "sea level", we're going to the beach & swimming today! My family supports a local "Polar plunge" which benefits the "Make A Wish" Foundation. Great cause, and lots of
fun!!!

Yes I figured you'd run her hot. I guess I mean if you were in enough elevation, you could save the barrel a few hundred rounds by easing back a bit and letting that elevation work for you. Forgot you did say your location was NY so it's about the same elevation as I am at.

Man I do feel kinda bad for stringin' y'all along like this! Just goes to show what a regular dude hasta endure to get a rifle built up & runnin. In a perfect world, coulda surely had a few hundred rounds thru that barrel, but the cookies just didn't crumble that way...
Called McMillan to check on the custom stock I ordered on 9/17, and was told it's still 2 months out o_O. So much for 3-4 months wait time!
But yes, I do apologize for drawing this project out! I did leave the part out about having a fresh 6.5SAUM switch-barrel chambered up for that 591, so that didn't speed things up any...
Believe me, nobody wants it done more than I do!!! It'll prolly work out to where the first 'chucks to pop this spring are gonna have an ultra-violent introduction with the REDLINE...

I think the list wanting to see this done is long ! But I'll bet the Chuck's aren't on it !!
Just have to hold my breathe a little longer :(

Still sittin' on "GO" here!

Got 20 pcs of brass built, best as I can make 'em. Trimmed, turned, primed and ready. Will re-use these, til they quit...

Call me biased, but I sure like the looks of the REDLINE case! Efficient and easy feeding 30° shoulder, nice long neck, and the capacity of a freight train...

How many steps in that process ???

John,
1. Run Virgin 7SAUM brass thru Redding Type S FL 7SAUM with .290" bushing
2. 2nd pass with a .270" bushing
3. 3rd pass with a .258" bushing
4. Then, run brass over K&M .224" ExpandIron mandrel
5. Trim to uniform 2.025" minimum
6. Then, neck turn to .015", using K&M turner w/ carbide cutting mandrel
7. Finally, run thru .252" bushing for a couple thou. neck tension
8. Chamfer/de-burr necks on RCBS Case Prep Center

(this is my 'bow-hack' methodology, using what I had on hand)

Prolly wouldn't wanna endure that process for makin' p-dog ammo, en mass, but it really ain't that bad with a small batch of brass. Heck, I made a venison lasagna last night, and that was alot more labor intensive!

Also, got some RL33 coming to try. If Retumbo or H1000 don't allow the FPS I'm lookin' for, that '33 sure looks like it might...

Ya it's a helluva lengthy process. RL33 is big boy powder. Rocket fuel for sure.

Reminds me off doing my first wildcat. 6.5-284 to 6-284. Not much of a reduction but, I was in virgin country and used 3 passes like you did. Sure feels good when you are through and ready to load up.
