I just tryed the lanolin & isopropol alchol lube mix
its a well known recipe
all I can say is
if you havent tried it you should
it goes on easy
no mess
works flawlessly
dont know why I waited so long to try it
without a doubt its the best lube I ever used bar none
simple to make
just get 100% lanolin & 99% or 91 % ispropol alcohal
bring them up to 110f in a pan of warm water
then mix in a spray bottle
add a ball bearing
to help mix
you'll be glad you did

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

What are you paying for lanolin and where are you getting it?

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

I use anhydrous lanolin and vaseline , 50/50 works great , comes off easy !!

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

That's the case lube that I use the most.

One caveat, make sure that you clean it off the brass completely before you anneal.

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

Is the lanolin and alcohol a 50/50 mix as well?

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

Me thinks the OP meant to say case lube and not bullet lube. ;) I use hBN for a bullet lube.

Nice catch. I didn't even notice that. I guess my brain automatically corrected the title of the thread to make me think case lube when I first read it. :)

Re: gee whiz ! bullet lube

I thought he was referring to lube used when making jacketed bullets. I use a lanolin based lube to lube jackets.

9-12 parts alcohol to 1-2 parts lanolin.

Great, thanks :) I like my imperial sizing wax, but I'm sure the lanolin lube would wipe off easier.

you dont need to wipe it off
its hard to tell its even on there
I've used all types of case lube
and this is by far the very best
not just easy to use but the cases go through the die effortlessly
and no wiping the cases!!
old timers were smart when they thought of this mix
I just wish I had tryed it sooner
I foung the 100% lanolin at a health food store
I coudnt find 99% alcohol so I used 91% -worked great

I am glad that you found something that you like, but I disagree completely about not wiping it off. I know that you have been getting away with it, but if the lube works well in the die, and you don't remove it, you have lubricated ammunition, and that increases bolt thrust significantly. Given the variety of cartridges that readers load for, including very large magnums that come closer to their action's limits, I think that it is not a good idea to tell folks not to remove your lube. Lanolin lube was the first that I used, and although combining it with alcohol and spraying it on may have great advantages when it comes to convenience, I am sure that you would agree that after the alcohol evaporates, what you have is a thin coating of lanolin on your brass, and in my experience, getting all of the lanolin off of cases can be a real pain, unless you use a vibratory case cleaner and untreated media to clean them. (I believe that it was this property of Lanolin, that prompted RCBS to come up with Case Lube II all those years ago. It is water soluble, and therefore easy to remove.) Again, I am not trying to rain on your parade. I believe that there is at leas one commercial spray that is the same thing. I am just taking exception to the advice to leave it on cases. IMO and that of a lot of others, sizing lube should be removed.

Willoghby,
I have screwed up the mix before and made it too thick. no stuck cases but sticky cases after. I recently have gotten into the habit of "boiling" the cases in an old pot for about 30 sec then while they are still warm into the STM for 30 min cleaning. I agree with boyd 100%..GET THE LUBE OFF! for a number of reasons and if you drop it all the dirt sticks ;D
IMHO the best mix is around 80% Alcohol and 20% lanolin. I get mine at the "whole foods" grocery store $5 bottle.
cheers,
Doc

I haven't mixed up a batch yet, but I will try using " Iso- Heet" ( red bottle) instead of alcohol.
I've read that this stuff is actually 99 plus pure isopropyl alcohol and easily available at auto parts
stores or big shopping outlets.

Would you all consider this concoction a good lube for progressives?

Old thread but good question.
I would assume this concoction is OK for progressives.
Lanolin & Isopropyl alcohol are the only 2 listed ingredients in Dillon Case Lube spray bottles.
