Gas Port irregularity

I thought I would look at my Ar-15 .223 gas port with my Bore Scope. I was surprised to find a good sized spade shaped scallop on the forward side of the port. Has anyone seen this?

Read the link below, 3/4 of the way down the page at this link they have photos of the AR gas ports. If you think these photos are bad then you should see photos of SKS or AKs fired with corrosive ammunition and not cleaned properly. I once spent two days trying to clean a Yugo SKS barrel that wasn't chrome plated and the gas port looked like a drainage ditch.
