Garmin Xero question

Your thoughts...I would like to attach a magnet to the bottom of my Xero and then mount it to a piece of metal. The metal is already attached to my rifle rest. The purpose of this would be to make attaching/removing the Xero quicker. Do you guys think the magnet would mess with the Xero's electronics? Garmin is closed until Monday so, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here.

Why attach it to anything? I’ve had mine for almost a month now. Multiple trips to public ranges, shooting between other shooters, actually holding it while shooting, etc. This thing does not miss shots, and it doesn’t pick up any shots that aren’t mine. I simply set it pretty much anywhere on the bench I’m shooting from, and it captures Every Single Shot, Every Time I use it.

What is the reason for wanting to attach to the rifle?

Why would anyone want to do this or that, or something other than using the tripod like shown in the user manual??
I can see wanting to use this cute little thing in many shooting situations.

Maybe from a bench, prone from concrete line, a fixed position that you have a good place to put the tripod.
If the location isn't fixed, or level, out in the grass, or maybe offhand standing then the little tripod might not be suitable. Highpower, across the course, maybe standing with a pistol with a low bench, moving from one target to the next.
I see fixing to your rifle, maybe with a way to quickly attach and remove as a convenient way to get more use out of it. I would watch out for the possibility of the rifle shrouding the radar beam and reducing sensitivity. Hard hitting rifles might rattle internal parts and shorten life. Is this thing "Springer Rated" ?

As far as a magnet strong enough to hold it in place a magnetic field probably wont effect it. Electronics components and wires and circuit traces may have induced currents with a (rapidly) moving magnetic field but a fixed field is probably OK.

Call Garmin tech support for advise. But I agree here, no really much neccessity for mounting with a magnet. I set mine right next to my rest with included tripod.

rifle rest not the rifle

This is a ceramic magnet. It will not stay on vertical surface but is hell for stout on the back side. Cheap to.

Not enough metal on bottom IMO.. would be as easy and safer to simply mount a 1/4” stud to your plate.

I got a couple SmallRig HawkLock quick release gadgets. I have one on the OEM tripod and one on the metal strip I have coming off the front of my rest. They're only $20 each and work great. From the long South American river.

Don’t use a magnet around a high end piece of electronics.

Mount a 1/4x20 stud on your rest or attach it directly to the rifle via a mounting bracket.

No magnets.

The magnet doesn’t affect anything. I’ve tried it as part of a series of tests on mounting it to my NeoX. I used a neodymium magnet and it holds but it will want to walk or slowly turn as you shoot so it was a no go for me. Ultimately I went with this tiny SmallRig mount and for my needs on a NeoX it’s perfect.

@F Class John
Question for you, will it still read if you turn the unit slightly?
Or does it need to be straight on? How much do you think you could turn it
before it wouldn't get the shot?
Like in your video, can you face it more towards you so you can see the screen better
and it will pick up the shots?

John,

How did you connect the Hawklock base to the NeoX?
