Gain-twist rifling

Hello all
Relatively new to the 6mm world, ex pistol shooter. Have a question about a type of barrel twist that's available for pistols but I haven't heard about in the rifle world yet. A company called Schueman makes a range called their Accuracy Enhancing Technology,AET) which is basically a gain twist design whereby the first 20% or so of the rifling is straight,i.e. has no twist) and then gradually gains in twist until the last 20% is the required twist rate.
This leads to higher chamber pressures being possible, less torque on the bullet while at lower velocities until it gets going, then torque applied graudally until full spin at exit.
Works well in pistols, and I can't believe nobody in the rifle world has heard of it before.
So what are the minuses of this system for long guns?
Thanks!
Cheers
Chris

yes I have heard of gain twist rifling in rifle barrels. I remember seeing a Pac Nor gain twist barrel advertised on www.shortmags.org. It was a .30 cal barrel, started with a twist of 1:50 at chamber end, by the time it got to the muzzel it was 1:10 twist. Barrel was 24 inches long.

I emailed Penny over at PacNor,I'm having a 6BR barrel made there now) and she said they got rid of their gain twist setup. I wanted to know if this was because the setup didn't work or just because we're a conservative lot, no reply as yet.
Dont see any reason why it souldn't work, in theory anyway. Schuemann does a roaring trade with his 1911 gain twist barrels...
Cheers

emotepix, I too am/have been interested in the gain-twist rifling for rifles. Let me know if you find anyone doing it.

Dan Lilja played around with the concept a few years ago. Too many problems, didn't see any real upside. The ads that I have seen was a company that makes 'cowboy' rifle bbls for lead bullets. I don't know if they still do. Haven't noticed an ad for a while. I was interested in to trying a gain twist poylygonal rifle bbl a few years ago when the talk was velocity gains with both the poly rifling and the gain twist. Never gave it a try. Pac-Nor is non comittal on the poly bbl velocity gain other than they do see some, no % was given. I have a Pac-Nor 6mmBR poly bbl so I soon will find out for my self. JimDee

I thought I just read somewhere about some of the Scheutzen shooters using gain-twist rifling. It was just a mention--no details.

Apex Rifle Co. in Prescott Arizona was the company from which I bought my one and only gain twist barrel from. The owner was Sam May,now deceased) and the last I heard, the person he sold out to was still making them. I tried many combinations in the M1A in attempts to get the accuracy which I was accustomed to getting from that rifle. I gave up on it after about 800 rds. The accuracy wasn't all that bad, it just wasn't that good. The rifle would give me about 2 mins. of angle at just about any distance but no better. The concept makes allot of sense but it just didn't work for me. Maybe the barrel or the installation or something wasn't just right but the replacement went right back to under a min. of angle and that was what I was accustomed to with that particular rifle.
Hope this helps,
Allen J. E.

Do a search for Ron Smith, RKS Enterprise Ltd., 403-631-2405 in Alberta. He makes gain twist barrels for rifles in a cut rifled match grade. They shoot very well.

I don't remember where I read it, but supposedly gain twist is to provide an increase in velocity without making any claims for accuracy improvement.

It seems to me that the barrel would experience problems with uneven heating, with the most heat occurring where there's the most twist. The uneven heating would seem to cause bowing in the barrel.

I've never fired one, had never even heard of one but the name of the thread clued me in and really, it was an immediate red flag. And I could be completely wrong too. -Rod-

Guys,
I maybe wrong here but didn't steyr scout come with gain twist?
At least that is what i heard about it.
