Future predictions of firearm technology?

We have come a long way in the last century as far as technological advances in firearms. So what is the next big step? What do you think will be the next AR-15 or the next glock?

If I had to guess I would say bullet technology will be the next jump. While the idea of a plasma rifle gets me excited, I see something along the lines of a self guided or self ajusting rifle bullet being closer in reach.

The army has tested such devices in the past but I believe they still need some fine tuning

A bullet that can steer itself has been developed by national security researchers for widespread use by the army.

US military researchers have developed the technology that will see regular army soldiers shooting with the accuracy of snipers.

In fact the four-inch-long, dart-like bullet is so effective that it can hit a target, guided by a laser, two kilometers away.

I am not sure I want to see any on the actions. If it gets any wilder we will be sending them in to be plugged in a machine to see what is wrong and a tune up every so often like the cars now days.

How about a rifle that has a battery and mother board inside the stock. And the primers could be ignited electronically.

Oh wait. That's been done.

In 25 years bullets and gunpowder will be obsolete. Technology has been speeding by us, except for firearms. Robots, lasers, heat generating radar and a multitude of things most of us can not comprehend.

Sticking with a projectile based weapon I'd love to see a man portable rail gun. You could potentially have a capacitor and a sabot projectile combined and loaded into the weapon not too dis-similar to current cartridge feeding. Capacitors could be re-charged and re-used. We'd be talking about MV's on the order of 8,000fps. Wonder what "barrel" wear would be like?

My prediction: 3D printed shell casings, everyone exactly the same and one less variable to deal with. I hope it's sooner rather than later.

Lasers. Pulse energy. No drop, no wind affect. The compact energy source is the problem. Mini fision reactor? Would have to fit in a small backpack.

Guns of the future...................gas guns. They are achieving awesome velocity using titanium projectiles. Basically runs on hydrogen. Southwest Research has (or had) a project going and were getting something like 18-20 thousand FPS. It's the potatoe gun from Hell.

Perfect case-less ammunition for small arms, gyro stabilized rifles at an affordable price, perfect and make electronic triggers (not priming) dependable and readily available.

Naturally, any of our visions will amount to nothing if we can no longer own firearms.

How about a rifle that talks! One that says "No idiot....you don't have a good position, your sight alignment is all phugged up, your trigger control is non-existent and your MOA setting is 8 MOA too low!"

That would be a robotic team match coach.

Second row from front, far left is Sgt. Clyde M. Sheets...team coach....and he's the guy that taught me all those things! I'm second row from front far right. Guys on front row were new shooters....trying out for the team. Most didn't make it! This was made Ft. Meade, Maryland, 1962 and we had just come from the All Army Matches at Ft. Benning, Ga. Sgt. Sheets retired and died from HA on the golf course at Moultrie, Ga. Told me one night he burned out three .30 caliber MG barrels one monring in Korea and stacked the enemy up akin to cord wood!! I miss him dearly!
