I'm thinking of buying a savage 116 in 243 for fun shooting, I currently shoot a 7mm Ultramag with a 32" barrel at about 12+ pounds and a 7mm Wsm on a Montana Rifle Company action. both require long distances to really practice. I'm looking for an off the shelf, low recoil, left hand, stainless mid range plinker with a good trigger. Any suggestions?

Barrels don't last very long for 243's. I would suggest the same rifle in either 260, 7mm08, 308 or a 223.

2nd if its just for fun a 223 is cheap to shoot/reload for and the one my son shoots with a cbi barrel has shot well out to 700 yards.

I can't believe how much fun I am having with my Rem 700 VS in 6x47L. Throw my MBR tracker stock on it and shoot 600/1000 BR and f class. Switch back to the factory HS stock and plink...well....everything out to 1200 yards. I have about a dozen steel targets set up to shoot out of my hunting shack out to 1365. First ime prairy dogging in 15 years and this gun was awsome.

Pure fun!!! And..LOTS cheaper than plinking with my 300 WBY's and 338 Edge!!

Thanks for the ideas, I agree that a gun should be fun to shoot although I've shot a few that aren't. My 7 rum is a hoot to shoot but it's about a 60 mile drive to find far enough shots to be challenging. And at 102gr. of RL33 it spits out 180gr. SMKs at an average muzzle velocity of 3663 fps. so I spend more time waiting for my barrel to cool down than I do shooting.

A Savage LRPV in 6br would be fun little gun. The 6br will do anything you want it to do out to 1k.
