Ftr question.

Anyone who thinks a .223 can't win at 1000 hasn't had their butt beat by Steve.
Thank you very much.

In moderate wind the .223 at 1000 yards will lose every time. I have both and really like the accuracy of the .223 but at a grand. it will lose, especially against a heavy bullet.

My .02

Just wondering, are you referring to the 90's or 80's?

90's & 80's don't have a chance against .308 heavy bullets Last year at the Worlds there was a guy from Canada shooting a .223, I think the only one. And he said after the match that he was switching to a .308 ;D

That was Bruce. I don't know about him switching calibers, but he came to Raton twice with a .223. F class can be masochistic enough, and the wind at Raton takes it to a whole 'nuther level, doing it with a 223 is just being a glutton.

Talk to the guys who have shot the 223 and the 308 at 1000. I know what he programs say about the wind drift, but all of them that I have talked to say that something is missing in the calcs because the 223 gets more drift than it's calculated to.
Can't agree with you on this XTR I have shot a 223 & 90gr for quite a few years
and when fellows shooting the 155gr in 308 would have 1 to 1.5 moa more wind on on same relay, the 185 gr Bergers wind would be same on both.
I had the pleasure of shooting 3 reals at Canadian Nationals with James Crofts (fine gentleman) he might give you a heads -up on 223 at 800 & 900 meters.

I remember shooting that day Paul. Wind was up and that 90 grain 223 did its job very nice at 800/900 meters. Hope to make it again.

I'm fairly new to FTR. Have both a .308 and a .233. On my third match with the .233 I did a 578/21X. Would have been better if I wouldn't have turned the scope turret the wrong way, LOL! Shooting 80SMK's. It's a lazer! Haven't touched the .308 since but it is much better in the hard winds. Don't take the little .223 lightly!

Because of a trashed shoulder AND being a techy, I jumped into FTR and the 223/90's. Did as much or more testing then most. Got it shooting very very well.

Did very well at mid range, winning most of the matches I attended and mostly against 308's. All smiles.

Then I went to the prairies and got a does of big wind..... Let's just say it was beyond humbling. Lack of experience for sure but things were on a scale that was brutal.

We did some team/paired shooting. Pick a friend and swap calling/shooting. Lots of fun. Friend shot a 300RSAUM and a nice big heavy bullet. I never called him out of the 9 ring (yes, we were shooting on an NRA target). We scored very well.

I coached him to the highest 1000yd score he had shot to date.

He starts and we go downwind, he calls for more wind, I hold off more and we hit center. Wind picks up and he holds me downwind more. Then some elevation, and more wind.

Then He very "bravely" called me into the "4 ring at 7 oclock" . That's bold me thinks - hit Center. then "3 ring"... But there is no 3 ring I says. what do you mean... it's 4 lines over he says....

But that is the 8 ring me says...... Uh???? then we both kill ourselves laughing.

I have tried the 223 at 1000yds - Raton of all places. Then at a variety of other venues over a 3 yr test of faith and frustration.

swapped over to the 308 in preps of the Worlds and life got a whole lot easier at 1k.

I can say, been there, done that at 1k

Can it be done... maybe but it was beyond my ability to drive with too often, more like spray and pray then aimed fire.

Shooting beside a group of 308's with 185's and 200's, I got punished 1 extra ring for similar mistake. At Raton, I spent alot of time looking at neighbouring targets and everytime we all got spanked, I was 1 ring worst.

Apparently, you can't loose points fast enough to win.

I currently shoot a 308 with a big heavy bullet AND a way to handle the recoil....

Life is alot better.

YMMV
