FTR Bullet Choice

It's late in the yr now. Most places don't have many matches left this yr. Get your gear together, get your load worked out, try to get in some practice, and shoot any matches you can find.

Come on out to AZ. Our season is just about to start. The Berger Nats is february is a lot of fun.

Unfortunately that's a 30 hour drive for me. You guys have fun out there. Back here in the east most of us are facing the "off season".

Did majority of Raton FTR competitors trim bullet meplats and Point their bullets for uniformity.

Seriously, if you are just getting into this stop right now and understand this part, this is the kind of stuff you do to get the last point that may make a difference in winning or second. It won't make up for missed wind calls.

If you are new to long range shooting nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing you do at the bench will make the bullet go anywhere near the center of the target if you can't read a switch.

It's late in the yr now. Most places don't have many matches left this yr. Get your gear together, get your load worked out, try to get in some practice, and shoot any matches you can find. It is way more important that you get a load that is shooting under .5MOA at 300 or 600 if you have the range to test than that you squeeze the last fraction of BC out of your bullet.

Concentrate on the things that will make big changes first, (neck tension!) then start nibbling on the edges. You can't buy skill, you get it through practice, which is why BBs like this are filled with discussions of bullets and bipods.

Lets not forget that this is an international forum and in their respective countries some forum members may be much more than beginners. Also some countries seasons are only just starting.

Certainly I am interested in the trends of equipment use. Alas a lot of this type of information is not collected but it is/can be interesting to see the feed back.

Personally I load at night and shoot during the day so there is no impact on my ability to practice but coming across pieces of information such as below does have an impact on what equipment I consider for purchase...

Brian Litz 180 7mm Hybrid

The special secret of this bullet is that since it has a wider than average meplat, the drag reduction that’s possible from aftermarket pointing of the meplat is much more than average. Typically the drag can be reduced (BC increased) by 2-4% for most bullets that already have small meplats. However, since the meplat of the hybrid is so wide to begin with, it’s BC is increased by 8% when pointed!

"Everything has to be right to do well at long distance, but most critical is wind calls."

Totaly agree with bayou shooter statement, I posted original Raton trim and bullet point question out of curiosity as vast majority of bullets used would have been the bergers and jlks with probably the most consistant meplats out of the box and was interested to find out if there would have been many shooters using the berger bullets who still would trim and point for competition.
