FT/R Stock---In Need of Suggestions

Bully

Silver $$ Contributor
I'm gonna build another FT/R rifle

R700 S/A
Single Shot (I have a Bob Sled single shot AICS mag block if necessary)
M24 Barrel
Adjustable cheek
NO BUTT HOOK

I need suggestions for stock/chassis systems to consider. I do NOT like having a butt hook. I'm not sure if I want to go with a "tactical" style stock or a dedicated F Class stock. I'm currently running a McMillan A3/5.

Any help appreciated

The X-it is nice but a tad heavy..I have one..I just bought a manners t6a elite carbon non chassis stock it will be at least 1lb lighter.I have a shooting buddy that uses his in Tr and shoots ok with it:D. You can put that weight in your barrel.

If Manners would make one with a smaller angle of toe, it would be sweet. Similar to the ELR stock, but smaller foot print for normal actions.

Is anyone running a chassis system with any success? Or are they just not a viable option if someone wants to be competitive? I'm shooting "local" matches. Nothing on a state or national level. Just having fun and trying to justify a new toy.

Not really a “chassis”, but I’ve seen a few do pretty well with an Eliseo tube gun stock.

A buddy has a KRG I believe anyway Remington stocks are easy to come by you'll be able to try /shop for several at a good price . No worries

I would look at:
Cerus FTR stock
McMillian XIT

I'm not saying you can't win with a "chassis" but you will really have to work to get it to keep up with the two I mentioned above.

Honestly if you are looking to compete in F-Class you should build a rifle specifically for it.

Bully,

I'm currently running a MPA hybrid chassis in FTR. It's their new chassis they came out with in the last year or so. MPA is very well known on the PRS circuit for their chassis. They made a couple modifications to their light chassis model. The hybrid has a 3 inch longer forend, 6 inch aluminum bag rider (mine doesn't have any angle to it but they may be able to modify it), low profile forend design, etc. cheek piece and butt are adjustable with set screws, not thumb wheel. There are also weights they can add in the forend and butt to make it heavier if you are under weight and want to get closer to the weight limit. Mine weighs 4 lb. 3 oz with moulded rubber vertical grip. They also make another grip that is 3 oz lighter if you need the weight savings. I was skeptical at first about trying this chassis after shooting wood stocks in FTR for years with great success but after trying it i really like it. The chassis feels solid when shooting, it doesn't have a ping/ringing feel to it like i thought it would being aluminum. I had this particular action/barrel in my Doan Trevor custom maple stock and it shot great. I took it out of the stock and bolted it in the chassis without skim bedding etc. Rezeroed the scope at 100 yards then proceeded to shoot a very tight group at 300 yards off the bipod in the chassis with the same load. I've since then shot it at 1000 yards in a few matches and it shoots just as good as it did in the Doan Trevor stock. I will shoot it in Raton next month at Nationals if anyone is interested in taking a look at it. If this is something you might be interested in give Al Olivier a call at MPA and he'd be more than happy to talk to you about it and answer your questions.

Here's my setup with the chassis to give you a idea of what you're looking at for weight.

MPA Hybrid chassis (4 lb. 3 oz)
Borden Rimrock SSR action (single shot)
30 inch Bartlein 5R heavy varmint contour barrel (5 inch 1.25 X .900 at crown)
NF Benchrest scope w/sunshade and Dan Pohlabel mirage cap (very heavy scope)
Jewel trigger
Flex bipod with picatinny attachment
Mirage shield

Total weight with all components 17 lb. 13 oz

There are a lot of good options out there as everyone has mentioned in this thread. This is just another one to consider.

I like the XIT stocks a lot... just got one with a RAD 2A installed, and plan on converting another one to it.

The MPA Hybrid stocks that Jade mentioned are first class as well - definitely nothing wrong with them at all. Only downside might be that it'd be difficult to fit a RAD 2A in there... but I'm sure someone will figure it out eventually ;)

Hello, my name is Max, I work at McMillan.

There are ways to keep the weight of the XIT down. But yes it can be heavy as well. I'm pretty familiar with all the tips and tricks to getting those as light as possible, so if you are interested, send me an email. maxwell@mcmillanusa.com
With your 3-way, not the rad, how light can they be?

I just got off the phone with Al and it's definitely under consideration.

I don't think I want anything as specialized as the X-IT so if @BLCKWLF has another suggestion I'd love to hear it.

If you could email me you build specs I can get you a better weight estimate. The RAD and our Light Weight 3-way weight the same 13 oz so stocks made with one or the other should be the same. On average they are 4.5-5 lbs, but can be lightened even more by a competent gunsmith.

Our A-6 PRS Stock is like the A-6 but has no butt hook. It has a 9 degree 5/8" strait toe for riding a bag.
