Frustrated with fliers. Need help.

I havnt tried the reloader 22 yet because i have heard it is temp sensitive. but i think i will try some this week. I stepped away from the shooting bench and shot a pig tonight with the 140 berger and wow that bullet does some damage. He was running at 200 yards and hit him to far back in the hind quarters. Never seen a bullet do that much damage on exit. Well its 2am and need to go to sleep. I am going to shoot at 600 , 700 yards tommorow since that is my whole goal behind all this madness anyway. We will see how bad the fliers are at 700. Maybe someone can tell me how to post a picture and i will show you an example of the targets i have been shooting at 100 with the fliers. Thanks for all the input. I will try some suggestions tommorow.

load the pix in your computer... when you post a message look under the box where type an click on additional options a click on browse find pic an click it ten click open an post

JBW, I know it was mentioned in an earlier post, but have you checked for runout? Most of the times that I have developed loads similiar to this, it has been runout. If you know someone that has a gauge that you can borrow, it would be interesting to just give it a quick check.

roll your cartridges on a smooth flat surface, watching the bullet tips for wobble. Shoot the ones with least wobble for group, do at least 5 shot groups.

A buddy of mine had a Kimber Montana 300WSM that made three shot groups like your rifle. His groups looked the same as those in a magazine article reviewing the Montana, which i showed to him. Funny stuff, that Kimber pissed Schmitz off so much he sold it. In the Kimbers case, the two shots snuggled together with the third out were not a result of funky ammo. He shot factory ammo, a variety of handloads that were straight as an arrow. Go figure.

Thanks for the info. I know this gun is a factory hunting rifle not a benchrest model but the gunsmith that worked on it showed me the target he shot and he put 10 shots in the size of a quarter a 100 using factory ammo so i figured since i reload i could do that or even better but by the time i figure out why i am having these flies my barrel will be shot out. The first shot is normally right , most of the time the second shot is the flier and the 3rd is touching or covering the first. The fliers are in a more horizontal move rather than a vertical one. The load is 71.5 grains of h4831sc with 140 grain 7mm berger bullet but sierra , nosler are behaving this way as well. The loads are a tad over the recommended max but no signs of pressure and running about 3050 fps. The barrel is floated and the action bedded. So dont think that it is the action. What ever it is it is very consistent. Probably my trigger pull? or load to hot. The barrel has been cleaned very well so not a case of foul play.

Try some of the same ammo across the chronograph and try to duplicate that. Your barrel might not like the bullets you are using. Your accy. is not bad for what the rifle is. It may be that it's as good as it's going to get.

I am using a rcbs 505 scale on every round. Winchested brass once fired, fed mag primers. The scope is a Mark 4 LR tactical 4.5-14. usually on 14 power at 100 yards when developing loads. No wind issues. good shooting table with sandbags. Chronograph ect. . The only thing that caught my eye on your reply would be the trigger pull but when i sit down to shoot i will usually dry fire a couple times to prepare and sometimes i can see the crosshairs jump off the bullseye an inch or so and sometimes it stays right on target. Would you recomend a timney trigger?

usually on 14 power at 100 yards when developing loads.

drop it down to 4.5 power.

the trigger pull

Squeeze the trigger..take up the slack before it breaks and then break it at the end of your exhale.

If that doesn't work shoot more than 3 rounds. If you shoot double groups then drop the charge a half a grain.

when I noticed that my cross hairs were not on the poa after I dry fired I immediately looked at follow through and finger placement.

If I am on the pad of my finger and i dont look up after the firing pin has fallen until I know that lock time is complete my poa doesnt change. I dont release the trigger until I look back at the point aim.

I also had significant improvment in group size and sd when I began annealing but I anneal after I resize not before which is rule. I find the runout issue is signoficantly less if Im FL sizing and dont use the button. I size then have a pin to open up the case. Seems to add much less distortion to the shoulder like the button causes.

I really think that annealing has helped to minimize chamber pressures variation and what I see in the sd reduction just seems to reinforce that and my groups are much improved.

I found the trigger and follow through really got rid of that annoying flyer. I use a factor trigger but its about 1.2# which is a lot compared to what group shooters use but half of a 3# trigger and it helps a lot.

The weather has been way to windy and cold to try all of your suggestions but hopefully monday will be nice and when i get off work i can try to start implementing yall's suggestions.

If you've been shooting numerous groups and always get a "flier" I'd suggest you check your bullet seating. Your bullets are seated too far into the rifling.
They need to be seated deeper which has to be "your call as to how much"
Your pressures are high right now...which causes the erratic accuracy.
Good luck
