Front Rest opinions please. What's your favorite and why.

Looking at getting a new front rest. Was wondering what works the best for you all. I've tried a joystick rest but actually feel more comfortable squeezing the rear bag, been doing it that way for years. I'm looking at the Sinclair Competition model. Brownell's has $50 off the regular price and another $60 rebate if you spend $500 with them, but price isn't everything and I would consider others. Would use it to shoot some br and long range bench matches. Any input on the Sinclair model or others would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Gabe

Not sure if these rests are in the US but the rest I use is a joystick Cicognani RCX. Beautiful rest to use and excellent quality. Not common in Australia more so in Europe.

Once you use a good joystick rest you wont go back to other methods.

Edit: This rest is used for prone F Class. For Benchrest, a non joystick style may suit better. Personal preference.

That RCX looks very similar to a Farley !!

Without a joystick...look for a older Slingshot made by Bill G...Bald Eagle. I don't have any experience with the new ones. They look the same, that's about all I can see. Hart rest from Hart Rifles in Nescopeck, PA. You see them for sale quite often.

Without know what the stock your using Any answer you get could be wrong.

Stocks I'm using. Both 3 inch forends. One is a Shehane Tracker and the other is your standard BR stock

Sinclair is I good rest for the money. If both stocks are flat on the bottom I would get it. Larry

I shoot F class and have used a Sinclair Competition, a Farley, and now a SEB NEO. I started with the Sinclair and found it to be a good rest. It was an early model and the machining was rough. Hopefully, that has improved. I have short arms and had a difficult time reaching the mariners wheel for coarse elevation adjustments. As long as I could use the speed screw, I was fine. The windage adjustment gave no problems at all.

As for joysticks, the Farley was good, but the NEO is much better.

Was at The Shooters Corner in New Jersey the other day and Bob White had a number of used rests there for sale. Might be worth a phone call.

You're right. I'll give them a shout. Still would like to hear what a few others have to say though.

Well I have a Farley but if I had of known of the Viper before hand that's what I'd be shooting off of. Bought the Farley because it's American made would have bought the Viper had I known of it, it's American made in a family with pride and love for this country that shows in his work with meticulous detail and craftsmanship that I haven't seen an equal to, Paying homage to Veterans and military personal with a product of heirloom quality VIPER 8)

The best rest I have used non joy stick .Randolph machine rest. all the adjustments can be done without having to reach . the new one works bot & left handed. the top can be replaced with ease. He has tops that is made for almost any type stock. only rest ii have used where I could make the adjustments with out moving my hand or having to reach. Larry

Check out www.viperbench-rest.com and go to the customizing section and take a look. Rock solid and 1 of a kind. Scroll down a bit and mine is the deep red one " Rose is a Rose ". Check out the whole site and see how the brass handles are made ect. Definitely worth a look even if it's not your cup of tea...........Rick

JJ industries is my choice for non joystick
I have the Sinclair rest with the Edgewood front bag and just sold the late model Farley and bought the JJ Industries rest. I can see the benefits of a joystick rest for F Class but for BR I clearly prefer the JJ Ind rest. For RFBR, the Pappas rest is king.

I mostly use my Sinclair Competition Rest. Like it because I also like to touch the stock, feel the shoulder and squeeze the rear bag.

Tried two different joystick rests. Disaster for me. My conclusion is unless you shoot "free recoil", it is difficult to get any real feel for the butt on your shoulder.

The last match [rfbr] I shot in the wind conditions were as mild as I've ever experienced. I found myself making absolutely tiny corrections, corrections so small that they would be impossible with a joystick rest.

I have owned and used in cfbr matches a Shadetree, a Farley Compact and an original Seb with upgraded bearings and a counterbalance weight setup. I eventually sold the last joystick rest and now use a homemade setup that uses an old solid Caldwell base, a Sinclair speed screw and a Farley Compact bag holder with a delrin insert.

Admittedly, rest requirements for rfbr are possibly more critical than for CF.... and if you believe that.....

If you think of the angular change of the bore cl in relation to the target for even the smallest poa correction I think you begin to see the need to be able to make repeatable, tiny corrections.
