DIY front rest

Kicking around building a joystick rest, looking for opinions on whether to use joystick movement for windage adjustment or if I should use a twist knob on the joystick with a rack and pinion design.
I’d like to use an inverted elevation movement, and standard left to right. I also don’t have a lathe or mill to build, is looking for input on preferences.

The joystick option would be more sensitive option. Additionally you would not need to take your hand off the joystick to compensate for any last second wind changes. Sinclair was probably one of the better options in the commercially available non joystick rest. Of course there are other names but availability was limited production. Good Luck with the project.

Thank you, I’m wanting to do the rack and pinion has a twist knob of the joystick. So, my hand wouldn’t have to come off. I found one that is a 20:1 ratio for the linear movement that I’d like to try. I’m just trying to figure out how to eliminate any slack in the system.

Do yourself a favor and save some money too. Just take a hard look at the Shadetree. Butch makes a great rest at a decent price. It works and all the bugs have been worked out by him. You can work out a base to put it on or just use something available. It's competitive.
