Front Rest Bag Sideplate Tension

Morning Guys,

Snow just got deeper and am beginning to fret Spring aint gonna happen... When I was out snowblowing, I was thinking....again. Those that know me, know that can be hazardous to my well being.. Dang, found the neighors missing cat....

Ok. Wondering for those that shoot fairly sharp recoiling cartridges, like say .280's, WSM's and the like. How tight do you set your side plates on your front rest (side tension on the forearm)?

Do you tighten down tight to restrict rearward movement trying to reduce movement or do you tighten firm to eliminate side play, but permit free fore/aft recoil movement?

Overall wondering how most deal with the difference in recoil patterns with the larger cartridges vs the non recoiling cartridges, like a 6br in a 22# rifle.

That's what I do.

The only difference for me is I make sure that I use all the eye relief on the scope.

Oh, and try not to flinch.

A HOF BR shooter has mentioned to me that side tension of the front bag on the stock forend is an important element in the tracking of the rifle, however the challenge is to do this without contravening the rule that requires the rifle to be lifted directly out of the rests.

When I switch guns or just the initial setup I put the gun in the rest and tighten the sides up until the gun is trapped. I then back off the the side plates until it is free moving without any slack or drag but very close. It is important to keep the rest square in every direction every time you setup or you will bind or trap the free moment and create vertical.

Completely ignor the recoil...get it out of your mind as you have enough to concentrate on and worrying about recoil is a distraction you don't need.

I was out at the 1000 today with a 16 # 300 WSW shooting full throttle

Recoil is not bad at all,( but i do have a brake) I even let it free recoil for 1/2 inch with just my thumb applying a little pressure on the stock at the grip to hold it in the rear bag.
I think you learn to deal with it.

Brakes are a big help. If my 21.75 lb. rifle had a brake, it would be a joy to shoot. We cannot use them in F-Class, however. Even at that weight, pushing a 230 Hybrid to 2947 fps produces a lot of recoil.

If you're not bleedin', you're holding on too tight.
