I started loading about 5 years ago and am glad that I did. I now load for everything that I shoot with the exception of .22LR. I always saved my brass and had a small assortment with which to begin this hobby.
When I go to the range, if I see someone nearby that is not saving brass that I can use, I am not too proud to ask them if I could have it, and am happy to clean it up.
This has allowed me to be able to grow my stockpile of factory ammo while still enjoying my toys with my hand loads.
When someone asks me to load for them, I politely decline and offer instead to teach them how to load on my equipment using their components. So far, nobody has taken me up on it.

I am still trying to get my brother to start reloading. He has thousands of brass hulls. He still won't because of how much room he would need. But then again he had stock piled huge amount of ammo before this.

If they are from Silicon Valley they likely have a good grasp on leveraging the internet. I would encourage them personally. As I’d be willing to bet they can get supplies and can help you get them also. Hard yes, but also doable with patience

I have been in the shooting sports for 48 yrs. Always purchased ammo or components in large quantities. Mainly because I hate shopping for anything. Heard lots of comments on how ridiculous or stupid I was. Now people like me are referred to as hoarders. To the devil with all of them. No sympathy here. I rub it in every chance I get.

Nile,,,I feel your pain,,,in the last few weeks I have had four friends and three "acquaintances" call me and what me to load ammo for them,(and use my components that I have been "hoarding"),,I told them all that if they can find bullets,brass,primers,powder for their rifles then come on over and they can use my equipment to load their own ammo ,,,they all said that they didnt have the time but since I was "retired" that it would give me something to do !!!,,,hahahahah,,,I dont know how I ever had time to go to work,,,If I was you I would give them all the techincal support tht you can and direct them to whatever sources that you know of to help them get their components ,and wish them good luck,,,Roger

Charge your friends $20 an hour for your time. They are free loaders.

Im kinda with Nile on this one. If I had a piece of brass for every time someone asked "how do you reload, can you help me(AKA do it for me), can you show me how", Id be sitting on a mountain of brass. It get old after a while. I truly enjoy reloading, but after 25+ yrs, I never had someone there showing me how to do any of it. I am 100% all about helping people, but they also have to help themselves.
Hope that wasnt to rough, but I understand Nile's frustration.

I have been reloading since 73,74 started with the Lee whac a mole die. Drove mom and dad crazy. Yet, after all the years and upgraded equipment, there are a bunch of people on this site I would really like to watch and learn more from. Have a neighbor who would like to reload handgun, I don't currently but I'm going to borrow dies. Will take a single stage to his garage and let him run a box of 50 start to finish. Figure we have less than 2 years, better to have more on our side.

All that said, nobody showed me the basics and I'll be the first to say that doesn't make me "better" than anyone else. What it does say is that I am very careful who I choose to help when it comes to reloading, shooting and hunting. Where I am going with this is real simple...reloading is not rocket surgery. If a person is too dull to pick up a book and read and learn the basics themselves then I really had rather not be the person who gets this idiot on track to blow himself up or otherwise kill himself or others that stand next to him when he shoots. Again, it's not hard, especially if you are serious about shooting and someone unable to grasp the basics and produce ammo that safely goes bang will probably never get it anyways and just cause problems.
I used to go hunting with anyone that wanted to go, especially new folks trying to learn the ropes...right up until I had a close call in the woods and almost got shot....

I too began handloading in mid 90 s with a simple Lee kit and 1 Hornady manual. Had no help getting started except from a few guys on here answering questions. I agree it is fairly simple to read and understand the process. I also read anything I could get my hands on about components and the operation. Observing the brass and careful techniques after firing will help teach a person alot if they truly pay attention. I always thought if I could do it anybody could. I agree with u on the fact that I'd be kinda nervous to try and help get anybody started that could not grasp the concept.

What I get from the post is the attitude the other shooters had, like "give it to Nile, he can't afford to buy factory ammo", now all of a sudden (well a year) they want to do what lowly Nile does and it that is the case I wouldn't help either. JMHO

Good thread and very timely. I had some help, my uncle got me started while in high school. I used his gear for the first couple times and I was welcome any time but it wasn't long and I started getting my own stuff. Every pound of powder was precious, and that was when 10 bucks would buy h4350 and my 243 bullets were under 7 bucks at grafs and sons.

So anyway, I've been loading for several years for a few family members who hunt. I've also felt snubbed by some who felt reloads were for the poor and didn't bother saving brass. I did find components for some of them recently at really good prices and luckily they saw the wisdom and bought up. I also bought some factory 243 for my nieces and nephew for Christmas, they were kind of like "huh?" but my sister knew the value. I recently sent an old reloading manual home with them for them to study, hopefully they catch the bug and talk their folks into it.

Idk, I warned people but sometimes it falls on deaf ears. I also don't feel like I should be the family/friend ammo store and have what everyone needs when they think they finally need it. I've set up almost everyone who needed ammo with what they need to this point, and not out of my own stash, but at a large cost in my time but I'm generally happy to do it.

I guess I'm lucky as the only shooters I frequent with are hand loaders also. Those that know I hand load never have asked but if they did, like previously mentioned, I would give them a list of stuff to bring over and then we'd get after it. The 20 rounds apiece I load for my dad and father in law last them about 5 years.......
