A quest for smaller groups on a budget led to a custom trigger to a Criterion 6 br barrel install followed a custom stock well I guess you know the list of parts doesn’t get smaller but the groups definitely do.
I push a Berger 108 with 30 g Varget at about 2830 FPS

Now there is a Franken Gun

Ok. Here’s mine. Skeetlee had a Winchester 70 action for sale so I asked him to put a barrel on it in 6.5 Creedmoor and send it to me. I had just received a hunk of Bumblebee so I used it to make a stock. The stock design was influenced by jpretle, who had asked me to make him a prone stock. I bought a PT&G bottom metal mag kit and put the gun together. I mounted my favorite Sightron’s 10-50 scope on it and.....

All custom rifles are "Franken-Guns" they either shoot well or they do not. It is nice to have a rifle that looks great but at the end of the day they are tools.

IMG_20190106_183532_854.jpg I think this qualifies as a Frankengun.

Does anyone remember the old hunting SAKO M995 rifles? Well this is one of those...except not like it at all.

So I had a regular M1A that I used for pig hunting. I decided I didn't like it all that much so I put it up for sale. The timing was just right and some guy in CA wanted it really badly because they were on their nonsense about semi autos again. He offered to trade me a 30-06 Sako with a Zeiss scope on it for my M1A. As I only had $900 in the M1A, I took his offer.

I traded the fancy Zeiss scope to my gunsmith to put a 300WM barrel on it, and for the barrel blank, and to open up the bolt face. It was also when KRG did a special run of stocks for these, so I ordered that too, and a scope rail from Near MFG.

All told, I gave around $2500 into this rifle. It was really just meant to be a fun rifle, but I've gotten a ridiculous amount of use out of it. Myself and a friend of mine actually ended up winning the first SE ELR Match light gun division with it, and I took 4th with it on the second go around.

I also leant this one out to a friend who's a shotgun shooter, and he ended up whacking 4 deer with it in one day, in addition to the one I whacked early in the morning. I think we took 7 deer between 3 people in a single day. It made him a believer.

Everyone I've loaned the rifle to has been ridiculously impressed with it and wants to build their own.

Well here ya go.

I have a couple, two mosins and an enfield.

First is one that I built for a friend when I was still working in another gunsmiths shop.

Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30, UK-59 machine gun barrel that was re-profiled, timney trigger, I fit the barrel, stock, trigger, muzzle brake, parkerized it. and installed the scope mount. Owner sanded and put the stock finish on.

Next is the first mosin I did for myself. UK-59 barrel, honed factory trigger (still horrible) and a stock i made from maple. Installed a bolt handle off a 1917 Enfield which works perfectly. Took it to an F-class practice match and finished in the middle of the group. Haven't shot this thing in several years. Lobbing bullets doesn't float my boat at 600 yards.

sketch-1569822697613~2.jpg Mine is still under construction.

$250 Savage Axis II 30-06
$200 MDT LSS gen 1
$2XX ICD P-Body 2 stock with STFU folder
$40 Leupold Backcountry one piece base
$370 X-Caliber 31" 284 Winchester light varmint Pre-fit barrel
$40 of Devcon steel epoxy
$160 of Glades bolt handle and black nitride fluted bolt sleeve for bling

Right now it still has the 30-06 barrel on it but I need to face the action and time it (if possible). The Accu-trigger needs some tweaking too, it has a 3lb pull, hopefully I can cut that in half.

I might get the barrel and some parts sent out for nitriding, otherwise some paint.

Less than $1,500 total with about $350 in bolt bling, a folder and nitriding.

I'll probably bolt some aluminum channel on the forend to extend it and ugly it up but it should help shooting from bags.

Another real Frankengun I have in an AK with parts from a Romanian RPK, Bulgarian AK74, Hungarian AMD65, a Russian Saiga, an East German chrome lined .223 barrel and Gallil mags. Of course it has an American flat (1.5mm), stock, pistol grips and fcg.

It all works together thanks to the design similarities of all the included variants, I just had to turn down the barrel to fit the front trunnion, mill the front trunnion to fit in a 1.5mm flat and assemble as normal.

It kind of looks like Hungary did a futuristic update of the AMD63 in the late 1970s. Very smooth and black but still very AK.

I really like that stock

I definitely remember this article from way back when and was inspired by his approach and his success. I thought the barrel lug plate design was brilliant, and the fact that he won matches with no changes to original design was super impressive as well. 1st iteration success is pretty rare for most inventors. I am surprised we haven't seen more from his magnetic damping experiments. Maybe I have just been out of the loop.
