Biden said he’s going to try and get the taxpayer’s to foot the bill for a new bridge.

Seems like the very first thing to do is get the bridge debris out of the shipping channel. Get cargo moving, then worry about a bridge that’s likely going to take a couple years or more to replace.

Relax, they have Mayor Pete to manage these disasters. Look how well he fixed E. Palistine, Boeing maintenance issues, west coast supply chain problems. This could have been one of those racist bridges he wanted to get rid of.

I love studying bridge construction. The history of it, the successes, the failures.

This particular design was a cantilever combination through truss and hanger support.

It‘s a tragedy on so many levels when something like this happens.

There will be an investigation. The owners of the ship are probably already getting their stories straight.
Knowing what I know about how many of these ships are maintained, I’m surprised things like this do not happen more often.
Fox News had an experienced Captain, (retired) on air who stated that in harbors such as this, ships have the option of having Tugboats to assist in coming in and leaving port. But since the ships owner has to pay for their use, some, like this one, opt out.
It would not surprise me if we see new regulations that would require tugboat assist for all ships entering and leaving harbors such as this.

Many of the newer regulations governing the Vessels we work on are a result of a serious incident. Sometimes it takes something really bad to wake people up to what can happen if things go wrong.

Also, if you notice, there does not appear to be any protective “dolphins” adjacent to the Key bridge‘s main abutments. After the Sundhine Skyway Bridge tragedy in Florida, where a ship took out a main span, they installed these protective bumpers in way of the main abutments Of the new bridge.

I am just speculating to but I can see in the video the ship lost it's steering when the powder went off. Once he got side ways to the current he was in serious trouble. The black smoke was probably full bore in reverse.

Just read there is an obscure 1851 law called the Titanic law that can limit the ship owners liability............so the American taxpayer is on the hook, as usual, to pay for this fiasco

Every time there's a high profile incident/ disaster, everyone gets promoted to the rank of Expert Investigator without:

1. Having even a fraction of the actual facts surrounding the incident.

2. Possessing even basic knowledge of the elements / physics involved leading to such disaster.

This amounts to being a juror who determines the guilt / innocence of someone without understanding anything beyond the opening statements of the attorneys.

Maybe wait until the people ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION take the time to gather ALL the facts before even beginning to make wild speculations.
