FOX news.....

....no, not the media outlet. Eight red fox pups emerged from their den for the first time this morning. That is a big litter. We got snow yesterday. They're in a pdog town right across from my place. With new hatch pdogs only days away, this could be very entertaining.;)

Wow, they are big already! With the winter we have had and now April perhaps being in the top 10 for coldest I would be surprised if here in northern SD they are a couple wks old at most. Some maybe a wk earlier but probably later also. Wouldn't be hardly anything to eat here with pdog pups a month or more away and pheasant, grouse about that far off from nesting? Not many fox anymore around here since nasty mange infestation spring of '95. Love to watch them pups. Just cannot seem to find many yote dens to watch.

Thanks for sharing. I was out walking my dog about 15 years ago and ran across a fox den about 150 yards out. They spotted us walking and decided to go into their den for safety. My dog never knew they were there.
You have a treasure there for viewing.

Many years ago , made the mistake of showing the wife red fox pups on the den. She watched for a half hour with a spotting scope from about 200 yards. That winter she rode around with my buddy and I looking for coyote and fox. We were looking that section over, I spotted a fox sleeping and went on it. Shot it, carried to the gravel road, where her and my buddy picked me up. She didn't say anything until my buddy left after supper, "was that fox one of my pups". 20+ years I have never showed her anymore wild pups. She helps pick the Vizsla pups, only pups she gets to see.

Got Grey Fox that come to the Cat's dish at night. A couple of years back, Mom started bringing her 2 pups. Mom came to the Cat's dish during the daytime hours and there was an "interaction" between the two. Cat went after the Fox, Fox hissed and screamed at the Cat and now they tolerate each other. From a distance. ;)
Fox and Deer run together at night. Fox runs and the deer are gone.
Deer run and the Fox are gone. Good working conditions for both.:D

Grey fox :The only living New World species of canid that can climb trees.
Seen it with my own eyes so I looked it up. Mother Nature IS very interesting at times.

This would be a great place for one of those live streaming camera setups.

A couple years ago Montana had a live streaming cam setup up watching a black bear that had made a big knot hole, way up in this tree, his home. It was pretty entertaining to watch, my daughter said he looked like a Marvin, so we called him Marvin the bear.

Simply Brilliant. Saw my first wild Red Fox on Ft. Knox Range roads while patrolling in a old Army Dodge pickup. I drove while my Partner sat in the back with a 12 ga shotgun/#4 Buck to put down Coyotes in the early 80's. Told him not to shoot the Fox, and we watched with amazement for about 3-4 minutes. Brightest red coat I've ever seen.
We did get 3 Coyotes that evening; I had to just put the truck in neutral and coast. He shot them while we were moving. They had learned if they heard brakes or a vehicle stopped that they would likely be shot at.
Pretty trick shooting if you ask me.
GotRDid.

We have annual fox shoots here in Aus that see 300 plus of these vermin removed from farmland a night. Our record was 33 in a night with 3 shooters plus a few feral pigs and feral cats and rabbits. The red fox kills so much native fauna in Aus each year, plus eat newborn lambs (just the afterbirth, eyes, tongue and crotch then leave the animal to die itself) These are nice pics but the only thing we do when we find an active den like this is setup rifles and wait patiently. The mother is usually easy to take as she is hungry and a predator call gets her in. The cubs are stupid and it’s often possible to knock them all over without them realising they should run.

You'd probably get some good pictures if you set up a trail cam on that den. It would be interesting...

I am using a little pocket Sony on VGA resolution with zoom maxed at 20X. Can't post high res. photos here. Wish I could.

Wonderful pics. What part of CO?

E. Adams county near Strasburg.

About 6:30 pm last evening. The pup count is seven, I miscounted yesterday.
