Found - The case from the shot that belled my barrel.

That happened to me once. That’s why I will never buy buffalo bore ammo again. This was in my Colt Custom Shop 10mm Delta Gold Cup.View attachment 1101448
I read a report on 10MM auto loaders a while back. Of the guns tested, the Colt Delta had more unsupported chamber than all the others in the test. I have a Ruger SR1911 in 10MM, and hope it isn't plagued with that malady also.

I had something similar happen to me in my 1911. Had a round where the primer fired but the shell had no powder. At the time I didn't use a powder checker and since I load on a progressive, you are not watching every round.
At the range the round primer fired. The bullet left the case but unknown to me it had not cleared the barrel. The next round when it went off hit the stuck jacketed bullet and the barrel swelled. This, in my case caused the slide bushing to jam on the swell and the slide was stuck about half way open. This cost me a new barrel but I went from a factory barrel to a Wilson Combat so not a total loss.
From your story, the round on the ground only finished the job. If it wasn't it, then it would have been the next round in the mag.
Glad that you were not hurt and that, other than the barrel, there was no other damage.

I have a friend (relatively new shooter, very new handloader) who did the rapid-disassembly thing on 2 guns in a span of a couple of months.

The first, with his M&P 9 he was shooting fast (he likes to show off to customers at the range), and apparently had a failure to fire. He quickly racked a new round in, and the ensuing shot bulged/fractured his barrel. No other damage, no injuries. I made it clear that with any FTF you should inspect as much as possible before proceeding.

The second was with a homebuilt AR-15 (I was present but didn't witness it); a round was fired that blew into the rear of the upper with enough force to shatter the bolt and greatly enlarge the ejection port. I don't know what happened to the barrel itself. We haven't figured out exactly what happened, but I suspect it was pistol powder mistakenly loaded in a rifle round (and this is just that - speculation.) Again no injuries other than pride and pocketbook.

Bottom line, when I have an FTF (hit the trigger, and recoil is abnormal, or I know where the shot should be and it isn't), I stop, unload (make sure you do so in a way that lets you inspect what comes out), check the firearm out for damage and ensure the barrel is clear (I use my cell phone flashlight at the muzzle and make sure I get light at the breech, assuming I don't eyeball it - that tends to make people nervous at a public range.) This won't do anything for overpressure rounds or not in battery problems, but will stop the squib -> plugged barrel incidents.

In the 80's I was shooting the center fire time fired stage of a pistol match when the guy next to me "blew up" his 1911. The magazine blew out of the bottom, the wooded grips split and the slide was jammed against the bulged barrel. Both the shooter and me were unharmed but in unnerved me.

I've always checked all charged cases in a loading block holding the cases to assure that a powder charge is in each case before I seat bullets.

To prevent a double change, I charge each case separately from cases turned primer side up in the loading block.

Had a gentleman next to me separate his rifle into multiple pieces on the 1000 yd. line at last years SWN on the practice day. Not sure of the cause, but sure was loud and his hand was swollen pretty good. I was a little concerned when he fired his second gun.

Dillon has fixed the powder measure problem years ago, there is an upgrade to the powder measure that forces the powder measure back into battery after every up stroke of the charging handle. Call Dillon tell them you need the upgrade to the 550 and they will send it to you for free. I bought my 650 shortly after they came out with that loader, I've had the powder measure upgrade on it for so many years I can't remember when I installed it. If you go to the Dillon website and look at the 550C you can see it attached to the base of the press and a rod running up to the powder measure. That is the mod you need to fix that possible problem from happening again.
