Fouling barral on the line?

I cleaned my barrel and went out to do some seating depth load development. In most of my guns, I have been able to foul my barrel in about 5 rounds. This new Krieger took about 8 rounds to foul. So when you need to foul a barrel on the line, do you just use the sighters to evaluate wind?

The blue circled shots in the target below are shots 6,7 and 8, then the POI changed and the rest followed. Everything was shot in a round robin sequence, these are 5 shot groups.

Thx Ted

It depends on the barrel. It looks like yours only changes vertical once it is nicely fouled. Some of my barrels have just shot big groups until they had around 8 shots through, hits could be off either side or low.
Clean bore shots have always been low for me. Sometimes the 2nd shot is in the group, other barrels take 8 shots.

All barrels are different and mine behave the way Rod describes. Some take only two or three shots, some take upwards of ten. C'est la vie.

I clean the barrels of my F-TR rifles after a day's competition and I clean thoroughly. At the next match, or the next day in multi-day matches, I shoot 5 sighters in the first relay and that is good enough to foul the barrel. I have noticed that my latest Krieger used to require 5 shots when it was brand new, but now after 1,500 rounds or so, 2 or 3 are all that is required.

Think it might be wise not to clean your barrel down to bare metal? ;)

Not down to metal, just a few patches with carbon cleaner.

The only time I've had a Krieger take more than one shot to settle in is when I've used JB to clean the barrel and then lubed the barrel bore with lock-eze...

Same can be said for the Rock Creek barrels I've shot. Like Steve said, all barrels have their own personality. Once you learn it stick to that cleaning routine.

If it's a .308, clean it every 400-600 rounds and call it good. Sure makes life easy and works just fine.
