Forster benchrest seating problem

Hi guys

When I seat a bullet with my 22BR benchrest seater forster die, it leaves a ring around the bullet tip. Its very noticeable but doesnt appear to dig into the jacket very far at all. It only is just detectable running a fingernail over it.

Would this be causing any trouble with accuracy? Im still hitting varmints hard but am just wondering. Is it worth trying to smooth the seater lip out?

If the brass has been reloaded several times then you might want to consider annealing the necks. My 30BR was getting to the point where seating the bullets was a real chore. After annealing the bullets went in so smooth and easy that it was amazing.

Going to try playing with the die settings a little first.

I know that when I size brass down from 6BR to 22BR with a false shoulder to blow out to 22BRX, the first loaded bullets are hard to get down into the case, have squashed a few cases but im sure its because the die was set in wrong. The last lot i did were worse as the die stem was screwed all the way in and maybe the cases were squashing before the bullets started to seat. Soon as I find out more I will post up. It only happens with cases set up for fireforming with the FL sizer, I necksize after that and it works great.

Not sure where i can get different collets here in aus, might have to order some. Time will tell.

That little circle won't cause you even one little problem being there.
It is a sign of neck tension being a little tight, but if it shoots great don't bother with trying to get rid of it..
How easy will a fired case take a bullet into the neck ???
If it's hard to start you'll need to turn necks......

That ring around the bullet is the seater stem touching the ogive of the bullet when it seats. They normally don't deform the jacket, just leave a tall tale mark. Some people don't like this and take a little bit of steel wool and work it around the stem to soften the curves on it and usually gets rid of the marks.

Another trick is to chuck a bullet in a drill, and coat it with Flitz or other mild abrasive polish. Run that up into the seater stem, removed from the die of course), and let 'er rip, hold on tight to the seater stem and use a slow speed). That will smooth the edge of the stem and add a small radius that will help avoid the circle pressed in the jacket.
