Form 6PPC from 7.62x39

Glen Zediker covers this in his book The Competitive AR15. (He ran a .22PPC for a while and couldn't justify the cost of using proper PPC brass in an Across The Course rifle, so reformed IMI made cases.)

You don't say what you want to use it for though. Brass quality aside, all 7.62X39 brass apart from rarely seen UMC headstamped Remington cases use large rifle primers. This alone will likely mean you'll never achieve full 6PPC levels of precision.

A friend shot benchrest successfully for a bunch of years with PMC 7.62x39 brass. The large primer wasn't a handicap. Guys who were using .220R brass didn't think it was possible. Some didn't like being beaten with anything that went against conventional thinking. The large primer was good for something like 150fps, or about 1gr less powder for the same velocity.

Looking for information about this topic. Any help would be good. Thank you.

Back when the old 220 Russian Sako brass dried up this was before Lapua the BR guys tried making ppc brass from 7.62x39 including me. Some even made brass for BR they just turned the rim down to ppc size and I forget which brand but some 7.62x39 has a small primer pocket. All that brass died with Lapua and I still have my form dies along with appr 250 cases and I still fire afew every year. I know that formed brass won some matches that was more than 20yrs ago and I forget which year but Lapua made a run of 7.62x39 brass under a KP label and I have some of that also.

You always hear this and that about the primer pocket size for the ppc. Myself I think it the combination of the smaller primer and that extra small flash hole. I still have some Sako 220 Russian cases that Skip Otto bushing the primer pockets alot of stuff going on back in them days that you never heard about.

I have formed at least 10,000+ cases from 7.62x39 into 22& 6 PPC

I necked them down to 7mm
trimed to length
turned the neck using a drill press
necked down to 6ppc
trimed to length
final neck turn for either 6 or 22 ppc

Accuracy is outstanding with all bullets using necked down cases. I found that best accuracy was achieved with Fed 210, CCI200, or Rem 9 1/2.

The problem is that IMI, Fed, Win, and Rem cases are all soft. You will loose the primer pockets real fast at the top accuracy node. If you want to use H322 with it's slower velociy accuracy node...you are good to go.

The best brass for this application is the PMC 7.32x39 brass that is scarce. This stuff is as tough as Lapua brass.

I got out of benchrest shooting and turned my benchrest rifles into p. dog rigs...went though a p. dog town like a bush hog!

The 22 PPC had a much better case life vs the 6 PPC in the reformed brass for some reason. I of course had turn neck match chambers on my rifles.

I tried to get PMC to start making PPC brass...the Pres of the company laughed at me.

I wonder if They make the 220 russian.
That would make the ppc . I think the companies making regular 6ppc brass {sako} had to pay some kind of royalty to the people who designed the case. Ferris and Doc palmisano. When the cases dryed up there was an article on it.
I believe it was Precision shooting magazine

If you want to try some 7.62x39 brass, send me some cases, I'll neck them down to 7mm and send them back to you. They will neck down to 6mm while you set the headspace just fine from 7 mm. I would think that the new 8208 with the large rifle primer would be a match made in heaven.

All you have to do is pay for the return shipping.

I have a set of RCBS dies to form 6PPC from 7.62x39 brass.
If anyone is interested in buying them, shoot me a PM.

Does a 6ppc, and a 7.62x39 use the same bolt face?

Could I make my 6ppc Ruger Varmint/Target into a 7.62x39 just by changing the barrel?

Not only the same bolt face, but 7.62X39mm is the parent case to the PPC via the .220 Russian. Hence, the opportunity to re-form 7.62X39 to one of the PPCs relatively easily. Another option nowadays may be to start with 6ARC or 6.5 Grendel brass, both being variants of the same design.

Likewise, the reverse route by a simple barrel change. (Not many people ever want to do that though!)

Precision Shooting had a 2 part article in the 9-92 & 2-93 issues with comment about part I in the 12-92 issue.

Also Handloader #162 had an article about making PPC from other things complete with load data for 22PPC from 7.62x39.

It was a sad day when PS went out of business... I still have some issues but not complete that were passed onto me from an older shooter at my club..
This web site fills some of that area today, as does the original 6BRforum with the ability to ask questions and get answers from a variety of sources...
