For the Old Timers -- Old Gun Ads

It is from Hunter's Lodge, aka "Ye Old Hunter".

In the late 50's thru the early 60's my family would make a trek from Charleston WV to Long Beach Island NJ to spend a week at my mothers Uncles house on the shore. My dad would plan the route so we would stop at "Ye Old Hunter" either on the way up or back.
I was 13 and dad and I would go in and mom and the younger brothers would wait in the car. Was the most marvelous place in the world to me especially the crates and shipping barrels full of firearms at prices a 13 year old could conceivable buy with grass cutting money. The only purchase I made was some ammunition for my Martini Cadet which I bought from Kliens in Illinois for $9.95, still have it!
remember $9.95 then is 4 million $ now . that is what old guys keep reminding us of :D

Hey Dusty , no offense intended . I got a ton of stories about an old shooting partner who lived in Little Rock , and I have a few of those Degrees myself . It was always fun to watch Jerry perform his country-boy routine . PaPa Charlie : I used to stop at a Monkey Wards many decades ago because they had the best Chili Dogs around . One day I saw a lot of 1917 Enfields for ( I think ) $29.95 . I bought one . I think it was so long ago ...... but it might have been a Winchester . Anyone remember if Winchester did make some Enfields ?

I will have to scan a few to post here.

I got my hands on a few American Rifleman and Guns and Ammo from the late 50's, early 60's last summer.

My favorite parts are the advertisements!

One of the best was you get a free shotgun with the purchase of a car!

Must have been nice.

I also liked looking at the BB gun pages in Sears or Montgomery Wards. Those were guns you could shoot outside the house. I had a Win lever action that would feed from the tube. The lever was hard to cycle but it shot good, don't know what happened to it.

I bought a very lightly used Ruger M77 in 30-06, less than 40 rounds fired, with a 3X9 Bushnell Banner scope for $250 in January of 1974. I still have the rifle but not the scope. At the same time Wolco had a cardboard container in their Sporting Goods section with about 20 K98K's priced at $12 each or 2 for $20. If I knew then what I know now!

yea but you leave out the fact that pay has not kept up with inflation and price hikes since the 70's

Was he using the newer inflation tables? They've been altered to reduce inflation adjusted payments for Social Security recipients. No longer take into account for real estate and gasoline prices and way understate inflation compared to older tables. I know, I was all over those table during the changeover.

Here's some real inflationary numbers: New 3 bd room, 2 bath, 2 car garage, 1130 sq ft home 5 miles south of San Francisco Airport (PRIME real estate) in 1955 was $13,000. Dad's wages as a Pan Am mechanic at SFO was $2.40 per hour or $4896 gross per year. That home's price was 2.6 years union wage income. Today that home is worth $1,200,000 and that job pays about $85,000 per year, or 14 years income. Price of McDonalds lunch consisting of Big Mac, fries, and a shake was .99 (no tax back then) and minimum wage was $1.75 in 1970. Price of reg gas was .25 per gal same year.

10 years ago while using the old tables from Dept of labor the 1970 minimum wage inflated forward to 2010 equated to something like $17.00 as I recall.
