FN Mauser in 222

I have purchased a fn mauser in 222 that appears to have been an old bench gun. The only markings on the action FN in a circle and made in Belgium. This is the first one I have seen so I am seeking any information that I can find.

You should post some pictures. There are a few fans of old 222s here including myself. I bet someone here will know something about what you have.

If you can, include some pics of the bolt face (and extractor). I'm a .222 fan for it's accuracy. I currently own a Rem 722 in one, with a 1-14" twist. It's basically a 400 yd. gun, max, in pristine conditions with the right bullet. 200 yd. rifle with some wind. @100 it shines with the right bullets where it will easily shoot 1/2" in most conditions.
With a standard weight barrel that makes it a pretty nice walking varminter.
My favorite, but I sold it, was a Winchester 70 HB that had a 1-12" twist. Best group I ever shot was with it, a .013". That of course is unofficial. But, putting a group together like that makes you just love the rifle/cartridge combo. No matter what other shortcomings it has.

Do not know if I can post pictures with an antique flip phone. But from my research it a 50s-60s FN benchrest action with a Douglass 1.25 straight cm barrel set in a old fajean stock. Barrel is little long in the tooth, lands at chamber end are lot light. Have a 14-twist 22cal.hart sitting here so will rebarrel to 222. Two things to decide is: Do I need to use a custom reamer or a sami reamer, and then sould it 24"or 26".

22 inches is plenty

Saami reamer is fine, use Lapua if you can find some.

I like 52 grain Bergers, Fed match and N133.

A 40 grain vmax will pop a chuck right out there to 325 yards. For cheap but effective groundhog or PDd bullet, try a 50 grain TNT.

Thanks, I have a couple thousand of the Bergers and a thousand BIB'S on hand. No lapua brass but going to try and reform lapua 223 brass. Have primers and N133 on hand

That is how my JC Higgings from Sears has on it. Bought it in 1963. I dont think that helps you. But it might. Tommy Mc

Ive got one , a FN single shot , 222 1.25” 26” long . Its a good shooter . Ive got the Canjar on it . Im getting to old to cart the thing , maybe training wheels .
The FN mauser was used by many companies. As bought from FN it came in 2 grades . One had an adjustable trigger and a smooth bolt shroud, the other was a srd 98 bolt shroud with the 3 position safety and a non adjustable single stage trigger . All were std length , 2 bolt faces were available, .30-06 size and 222 size .

Thanks for all posts. Mine has an adjustable trigger will have a new barrel in a couple of weeks. Still have'nt figured out pictures yet but trying too.
