Flyers Follow up

I won't go into all the mind numbing details, lets just say I went all out anal. My best groups were with sierra blitz kings neck and body sized, 26.3g H335, CCI BR-4, velocity 3314, ES 48, SD 16, group size .52/.55 .

I have some pretty bad velocity spreads going on here, and these two groups were the best average I got velocity wise also. The bulk of extreme spreads are up around 100 and standard deviations are 30's to 40's. How should I combat this? Primers? Different powder? Or am I asking too much from a factory rifle with a tired barrel? Of the 18 groups fired, 4 were under 1/2in.

Yep, it looks like you may be asking for too much, might start thinking about a new bbl, if that thought has not already entered your mind.

Hi Glenn,

I followed your previous thread, and you were using H335 and CCI BR-4s. I am just wondering if you have tried any other combinations? A few rounds with a new combination is a whole lot cheaper than a new barrel, etc.

Another poster mentioned this and I will second his results. I switched to Rem 7.5 primers (from CCI BR-4s) in all my .223 and .20 cals and it reduced my es and all groups have improved.

I use H-335 for my ARs. For my bolt guns I use something else.

H 335 is a good powder for the 223 especially with 55 grain bullets but I prefer "stick" powder; it appears more consistent at least in my 223's.

I've had my best success with Varget and Benchmark in 12"twist bolt rifles with 50 and 55 grain bullets.

1/2 moa is entirely adequate (even great) for varmint hunting in my experience - just as important (or more so) is consistant shot placement i.e. does the load/rifle/scope system hold it's point of impact over time.

I've found that H335 tends to change point of impact more that the aforementioned powders with significant changes in tempertures.

I think I am just gonna give up on this barrel. Its my first to burn out, and I am quite proud of that! Groups have been opening up, I used to get a couple or three groups in the.2 .3 range and now a .4 is tough to come by. Besides, gives me another project rifle. .223?.222?.223ai?6mm223? Decisions, decisions. Thanks for all the help, I have learned more in this thread then years reading magazines.
