Fluting my firing pin?

Ya, I have pretty much thrown the book at this gun and my conclusion is i'm about done...I can get nice little cluster groups in the mid to high .3's after a warm up of about four shots consistently... I really don't think it has more potential so I have started a new gun on a tact 300 action...I don't disagree with the comments on here I just think every little thing helps in a hole (group)...

You posted, I'll critique since I assume you want comments on how your new barreled Ruger shoots:1/ For Shame for Shame...You don't use the easiest, simple component to improve your groups the most.........no wind indicators? Not even simple survey tape on a stake
2/ Resting the pistol grip on the sandbag is not ideal if one wants to shoot small. 3/ 5-shot group cold turkey?....if your going for accuracy a few warm-up fouler shots are usually necessary .......this group most likely is not representative of what the barrel will do.

WRT electric ignition: My point is that such isn't available. You can't shoot what isn't available. You can't plan a shooting season around unobtanium.

It's not a new idea. It's been tried before. More than once.

Lhsmith: true for the most part, I am in need of a good rest.. The bag is temp and seems to add to vertical spread...

What you CAN DO is have a discussion about it. From many discussions come fresh ideas and sometimes 'spark' (no pun intended) innovations, but at the very least can result in exercising the thought process.
I know it's not new. I won't say I've fired more electrically primed ammo than anyone else in the world...but I'm in the running. And that was a long time ago. (1963-1968)

After all this we still don't know what the Rugers been rechambered to. I'd be willing to bet shooting in the same condition will trump the rest upgrade (if you use that Bulls Bag correctly) Survey tape ~$2/roll

If you are consistently getting .3" groups out of a 243 off a bull bag without wind flags, you should be very happy.

With full race equipment, 5 5-shot groups in the low .2s would put you on the leader board in a lot of country benchrest matches.

Mid to high .3's and I always want to do better.. I read everybody saying you need to shoot .1 and .2 to compete...But realistically I would be super happy to get low .3's and a high .2 once in a while...that's the goal and LHSmith is probably right that I need to work on my stuff first...

Here are some thoughts, take them for what they're worth:

1. A 243 is a superb hunting round. I have a Tikka T-3 sitting in front of me right now. Love that rifle. If you are looking for small groups, I'd suggest setting that 243 back and getting it chambered in 6BR. If your bolt face will do it, 6PPC might be an option. I'm skipping a lot of stuff here based on assumptions about what kind of shooting that you're doing.

2. Get the bedding checked over by someone that really, really knows the Ruger action. That angled recoil lug with the action screw presents unique issues.

3. The trigger in the M77 is typically for crap. It's hard to shoot good groups consistently without a great trigger. I don't know what's available for them.

4. If your action hasn't been trued up, consider it. Every one that I've seen has had an issue with the lugs not bearing evenly.

5. Pick up a used Weaver T-36 with fine cross hairs. It will help you evaluate your rifle and you can put the hunting scope back on afterward. When you're talking about .1's of an inch between good and bad, a target reticle matters.

6. I'd make dang sure that the sling swivels weren't in the way...and they are almost always right where they would get in the way.

7. Wind flags. Go to Tractor Supply or similar and get 4-6 cheap fiberglass poles. Place them at even intervals down your shooting lane. If you can manage it, place them so that they are "stacked" vertically from the perspective of your shooting position. You'd need to get someone to help you and talk via cell phone or walkie talkie. Tape a strip of surveyor's take (or something slightly heavier) to the top of each. Look for a wind condition that is consistent. Watch those flags and get your group off before it goes away.

8. Pick up Mike Ratigan's and Tony Boyer's books. There is a wealth of information there.

This probably should have been item 1. I'm sick as a dog and not doing my best writing today. My sincere apologies.

Since the OP mentions a desire to compete .....Non-competitors should not overlook the significance of the (5) 5 shot groups or Aggregate. They are shot over the course of several hours which means varying field conditions...wind, mirage/light which one must adjust for by load, hold-off or both. Also you must be able to overcome shooter(s) adjacent to you who could upset your concentration and/or bag set-up/reticle jump due to shock waves. Of course the best way to learn is to jump in and compete, it makes the learning curve shorter.

I don't think I will compete with this gun..I am in a waiting game on a 300 win build and the nearest benchrest shooting is williamsport ...

Sounds like you're interested in the 1,000 yard stuff. I'm going to shut up...I know zip about that game that isn't bleed over from the 100-300 game.

a friend of a friend, Bill krazinski would be who i have or am thinking about putting it together ..I'm about a year away from any kind of competition...

Is a one piece rest legal in most venues? I see a rest that looks interesting (1000lp one piece shooting rest) at accurateshooter.com

Here is a starting point. It has links to the 3 organizations.

Williamsport rules. Look down around rule 43.
