Fluting blanks

View attachment 1165469 View attachment 1165470 After reading someone's comment about not fluting button rifled barrels I thought I would do a little bit of measuring and here's what I come up with I air gauged it from one end to the other and needle didn't move on air gauge no fluctuation whatsoever so I tend to disagree on the fluting of a button rifle barrel.
So do I.
I have one rifle with a fluted buttoned barrel and it is an absolutely fantastic shooter.

I guess a little more info would be in order. This year I plan on skipping one of my 1000 yard weekends and try a 2000 yard match. I have a 338 EDGE in a Rem 700 / Mc Millan A5 stock that I use for hunting. I shoot it enough to know that at 14 pounds it is going beat me up a little. I REALLY would like to do up a 33 or 37 XC tube for my 1000 yard LG, but just can't justify all of the added expense for 1 match. BUT, if I chamber up another EDGE tube, the only expense is the tube and smith work. I have the dies, brass, bullets, the correct bolt, powder, etc..... already, and if I can get it to make IBS 1000/600 17 pound weight class I can shoot it there , also. At 33 inches (I want long for the added FPS) it would need to be fluted to make the 17 pound class. I can weight up the stock to 40+ pounds for the 2000 yard mach, so recoil won't be an issue.

Anyway, that is the plan at this time.

Was that barrel fluted pre-rifling or post-rifling?
My input that your disagreeing with is for fluting after rifling only, that is based from the advise of 2 separate barrel mfg's to me directly.
Actually thinking you and I to have had conversation also on just that aspect?

That barrel I air guage was post rifling the groove dimension didn't move im opposed at fluting but I always have thought how fast you try an get rid of metal is what creates issues I've always felt if you want to get lighter use a shorter barrel or contour it lighter.

I will try an explain a little better we buy a whole heat of steel in our testing of rifling and stress relief we want to insure the bore and groove does not move in size or warp so if we did our job on testing stress relief fluting isn't going to change dimensions if it is done properly.
