whats the skinny on barrel fluting

Mikecr, I agree but a smaller contour Barrel heats up faster because there is less metal so the barrel heats up faster and gets hotter overall during a long string. So fluting helps after the string in cooling but should have a less desirable affect during the string. Do you agree?

Fluting doesn't decrease contour.
A fluted barrel is still the same diameter, but with more surface area.

snake its been my experience that my fluted 6BR barrel will take 3 more shots to get as hot as my standard unfluted barrel. no scientific testing,just the feel of my hand on the barrel, i will say i see less scope distoration also with the same amount of shots through the fluted barrel, again no scientific testing.
my barrel is really fluted not for cosmetics. max fluting..
my thoughts on the heating and cooling are the bottom of the flutes are closer to the bore so the heat can escape faster and the metal between the flutes act as heat sinks and draw the heat into them pulling the heat away from the bore. no scientific test just my observation.
My last fluted barrel has been the most accurate barrel i have ever had. thats why i question it.
i have another barrel just like the one i have and another one in a lighter contour to test it and see if it shoots.
i honestly think it will. I also am thinking at this point that the longer the barrel the more benefit do to less muzzle sag. the fluteing combined with the right contour is what im trying to say.
