Fluting a hummer barrel,yes or no)

I have a 284 winchester,bartlein barrel on my hunting gun in a sindero countour.shoots 5 shot groups under 2 inches at 600yards.Killied two deer at 800 yards with it. But it is heavy,12 pounds with scope. Would you be scared to flute a wickedly accurate barrel like this one. I am worried that it may effct the way it shoots. Thanks for any advice.

Get another gun to shoot deer with, if that's the deal.
Or, go change barrel and save the hummer for when you really need it.

Flute that " hummer " ? Not no.... but heck no !

First, I don't think I would mess with a barrel that is shooting that well. Second, how much weight do you think a fluting job will take off your rifle? You'll still be carrying an 11.5lb rifle around.

If it aint broke don't fix it........
Lots of other ways to loose weight if you think it will help.....
If you think a lighter rifle will shoot better, you might want to rethink that....

winters7466: I agree with all of the above, but if you're still undecided/convinced, why not contact Bartlein? From the Shilen web site: "Fluting is a service we neither offer nor recommend. If you have a Shilen barrel fluted, the warranty is void".

I know that heavy is more accurate,,but i hunt at a 4 way cross .several hundred yards in all 4 directions.i am constantly shifting from one direction to the other looking at deer.i tried binoculars but the deer usually cross so quickly you need to use the scope if you want to get a shot.

I was also going to flute the bolt.put hart aluminum rings,and alumnium bolt shroud and firing pin..I figured that all that combined with barrel fluting would take off maybe a pound.

One good thing about your barrel is it is a cut-rifled tube. I'd be less hesitant about fluting that than a buttoned barrel.

If you want to lose a pound skip the Big mack for lunch.

Leave the gun alone.

I personally would not touch it if it's shooting that good. Learn to live with the weight.

depends on your smith ! as from the engineering point of view it brakes down like this

if the fluting is done without putting to much stress on the barrel then they is on reason for it to shot any worse/better

but should the barrel be subjected to over stressing while the flutes are cut then anything could happen !!
