I need help finding a jag that matches the rifling in the barrels I use. How do I align the jag correctly after I cover it with a patch? Should I slug the barrel and send it to the jag maker? Should I just bite the bullet and buy carbonbots that work in all barrels. Any thoughts?

All a patch and jag is for is to apply fluids so they can soak stuff clean. No need for them to fit exact tight. In fact if they do you will have trouble and get them stuck. Brushing takes care of the grooves. Matt

I've found that depending on Patch size determines what cleaning Jag I'm using.
I like generous sized patches as I feel they help get the job done a little quicker & have more surface on the bore. - I'm usually using a 7mm (.284) proof-positive jag in a 30 caliber bore. And a 30 caliber jag in a .338 bore. - As Matt stated if they're too tight they just lead to problems.

Never used (nor seen!) one of these things but my guess is patch thickness is calculated into the dimensions these things are made to. All the rifled jag does is hold patch in firmer contact w/ shape inside bore. Pesonally I don’t think bores need to be that clean but that’s strictly my opinion.

"Work" as in follow the rifling of the barrel without binding.
That's what I meant by "work".

I use a 22cal plastic jag for everything up to 30cal and let the size of the patch (that I cut myself) dictate the fit.

A small jag with a big patch helps to get inside the groves better. I make patches from old t-shirts... I usually look for a t-shirt that's a bit thicker than standard (like some t-shirts with collars). 1 t-shirt lasts me a while.

This struck me and a very good friend of mine that makes well known match barrels as one of the better systems to come down the pike in years if your objective is to f..k up a barrel.

I thought that this was a late April fools thread and was going to push my new Boat-tail jags...but...never mind.

As to the op...is there any evedence that with a properly fitting patch is there any benifit?

Will a 4 groove cut rifling jag work in a 5R barrel or a 6 groove button rifled barrel?
Sounds a little like a P.T. Barnum sales tactic to me.

In retrospect, this sounds like a good product as long as the major diameter of the jag matches the minor diameter of the barrel. It would allow more cleaning juice on the patch. And now I have to look up the meaning of retrospect. I now the meaning of "work".
Boys and girls, in my expert opinion, which I value highly, the finest jags out there were produced by David Wick of Auburn, Indiana. David was one of two famous people from that village. Tony Stewart is the other one. The recess between the fore and aft portions of the jag was smaller in diameter than most jags and allowed more cleaning fluid to remain on the patch. The fluid is what reacts with the copper and carbon in the barrel and cleans the barrel. David Wick passed away and then David Allred in Montana produced the Wick jags. I lost touch with David Allred but I don't believe he is making jags any more.

Several years ago Dave Wick, an accomplished benchrest shooter from southern Ohio, made brass cleaning jags freehand on a small lathe. Almost any shooter who used one of Dave’s jags said it was the best jag he had ever used. Dave Wick has passed away, but lots of shooters have asked if we could make jags like his –
