Florida Turkey

Here in Florida you can use rifles ( I used my 223) and you can take two gobblers in one day for the season limit. Did that yesterday late afternoon.

Called two hens to a decoy. Called more while they were in sight and then a gobbler came in. He stopped and started to strut and fan. My 55 gr. Dogtown bullet in the neck stopped that without a wiggle and no meat loss.

Left him there and called again. The hens came back and so did two more gobblers. I liked the second one and waited until it paused near the decoy.

Precision shooting has many forms. Skinned them last night and they are in the refrigerator right now. One beard was 8", the other 6".

My wife cooked some in a crock pot. She did some very creative things with it.

Maybe the dog will eat it? We are throwing that out and trying another way.

Hamburger tonight.

I ve never eaten a wild turkey. So i stopped shooting them years ago. I just call them in and watch. Biggest ive killed, and they are fairly common on my place is a 13 inch beard.

I got a somewhat albino rio grand ive seen, looks awesome, if i ever get a chance to shoot him ill full body mount him. Neat bird.

Good shooting Larry . We hunted all weekend. Only seen 3 toms . We hunt public land at Avon park bombing range. No rifles or afternoon hunting . Wife did it the same as
Regular turkey . The other Larry

Great Hunt.....A good friend is down that way right now from Pa for turkey and pigs.......I'm jealous of both of you...;)

I used to fry wild turkey until my buddy taught me how to grill one. Take a whole wild turkey breast and marinate it in whatever you want, sear it on a hot grill, and then drop the heat and cook it slow. A meat thermometer is a must! Cook it to just on the poultry minimum temp or even a little under and then let it rest on a plate. If left a couple degrees under it will finish on the plate after you take it off. Slice it like you would a London Broil and it is fantastic. I dont think i have ever had a store bought turkey that can compare.

Only ever shot two. The first was a Jake and was right tasty. The second was a big old Grandpa. Tough and tasted terrible. Even the dog wouldn't eat it! Never went turkey hunting again.

Leave tomorrow for 4 days of hunting I didn't see any Tom's but lots of single hens. No water so it over a mile walk to the cypress heads . That is too much for a 78 year old fat man . Smile Larry

Know what you say. My pond is bone dry. No rain of any amount at my place since maybe last October. Had to pick up a dry turtle walking out from a neighbor's large and also dry pond. Put it into a creek flowing into the Little Manatee River. Horrible drought here.

Now on the flip side, where I hunted is walkable and dry. There's still swamp and water but normally, it's hard to enjoy a walk without snake boots and watching where you put your foot. I stuck a quad, all four wheels, on a path there just last month. Had to use a large tractor to pull it free. Sure has dried more since then.

Turkeys everywhere though. Just no hogs for some reason. Deer are also a bother. You just never know.

Usually we just use the breast meat cut in pieces rolled in flour and fried in butter. Others like to deep fry it. You guys are the firstIve heard that doesn't like it.

I just returned from Florida wish I would,ve known about all your turkeys Cap. I may have looked you up. Fishing for bass for 6 weeks is OK but a turkey hunt to break it up would have been super. Going to Nebraska with son and grandson for archery turkey next week.

...and I am going to my place in Georgia for turkey and deer-stand work starting this weekend. When I return I'm going fishing right here. GIANT fish and lots of them around here.

My biggest this year was 7-11 but I'm an artificial guy not a live baiter. MYbe next year I'll try that shiner route.

I only fish salt water. Catch large grouper, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, porgies, hog snapper, flounder, cobia, kings, Spanish and way, way more.

Not worth dealing with fresh water and those little fish.

Soak in Chiaveta's (online from Syracuse or rochester NY) for 1.2 hour. Grill over hot coals or 3/4 gas grill till no pink. Knock out your brother in law when he comes back for thirds before you get your firsts....

Good eating birds.

Nice shooting. Wish NY allowed rifles cause I would turkeyhint then I hate sitting in the woods with skeeters and blackflies eating me.

Fantastic shooting!!! A turkey in the neck....wow!!! My wife seems to cook more for the dogs than for me as well. I would say, "lucky we got 'em"...but not if you're hungry.
