Floaters in Vision — What to do?

Please, Please, don't pay attention to the 'doctors' on here, giving unqualified diagnoses(but I suppose that's what you were asking for). Don't panic, but get to an eye doctor(I am one). Floaters are commonly found in people over age 70. Almost all of the time they are benign and nothing to worry about. They are called posterior vitreous detachment. In very rare instances they can cause some bleeding, but this too is almost always benign. You may always be aware of them in your field of vision. They may settle somewhat out of the way. Let your eye doctor make the diagnosis, and hopefully allay your fears.
and what about the drugs listed above

I have had cataract surgery on both eyes but I had floaters long before cataracts. While shooting, if they get in the way I just roll my eyes and it slings the floaters out of my line of sight. Do not move eyes up and down or right to left- just roll your eyes.

I have been to 2 optometrists, both recommended dietary supplements and Systane Complete over the counter eyedrops 4-6 times daily,,,,,,, and that seems to have kept the floaters at bay, for me. The right lens prescription helps, too. My cataracts aren't large enough to recommend removal, yet,,,,,,, very slow growing @67yrs. Visit an eye professional!

I've had them for years now, but last week got worse with a mutch larger ink blotch looking one that seemed to hover right in my line of sight. I did see my doctor who set me up with a opthamoligist Monday.

I think we all know that these small floaters are going to happen naturally. But when anyone sees a big change, the wise thing to do is consult a doctor! He did see flashing lights can be a sign of things that need immediate attention.

I told ya about floaters, almost forgot. I had a thing get in my vision that looked like a tree limb hanging in my line of sight. Went to some kind of big shot eye doctor in k.c. . He said it was a blood vessel came loose and started hanging in my line of sight. I thought I had cancer or something. Some kind of trama caused it. Its not as bad as it used to be but I can still see it when I get out on the snow. Thats been 30 years ago. Doug

Howdy !

You did not describe just how bad your floaters might be, such as..... have a lot of them.

If there are a bunch, you might be encountering a situation where you have some bleeding within the eye (s ), One cause for that is when the " vitreous humor " starts to degrade
w/ age; and the merge point where the " gel " becomes a thinner liquid can lead to the pulling away of the inner lining of the eye.... and this introduces loose blood inside the eye.

It has happened ( and occasionally still does ) to me, and I have had varying amounts of such bleeding take place. From seeing just a few " floaters ".... up to not being able to see out of the affected eye at all. When there is a lot of them, a " halo " appears around things like overhead round light fixtures. After the bleeding has stopped, the body clears out the eye over time. Hope this is not the situation you find yourself in.

IMHO - High " ocular pressure " couples unfavorably with the above condition, as does excess straining while performing certain bathroom functions, high blood pressure, doing lot of bending over or other head-down work; etc

Also, don't trust them when they say lasers in-use are eye safe. One of those gave me a small but permanent bullseye looking floater in my Lt eye, when I happened to accidently look up into the path of a ( supposedly " eye safe " ) beam, Can't undo that, readily.

Had floaters for a number of years now. See an ophthalmologist with an array of sophisticated equipment to monitor eyes regularly. Had a vitreous detachment with some bleeding earlier this year. The ophthalmologist says it's part of the normal aging process but worth having it looked at because it could be something more serious like a retinal detachment. I now have a monster floater in my right eye were it was only small floaters. Doc says it will settle over time but anything done to remove it can make the problem worse. It does bug me when it floats across the crosshairs of my scope.

She put me on a supplement.
the ingredient list on the supplement seems very much like that for ringing in the ears (marketed as lipo flavonoid). it is mostly that bitter pithy material inside citrus rind i think. it is claimed the action facilitates better blood flow in those tiny capillaries (?)

this is not medical advice, but maybe 'one stone, two birds... '

Wouldn't that be great. Good hearing aids has helped my tinnitus during the day.

Had cataracts in both eyes mid 50s
Had new lenses installed but elroy the floater was still there.
Had weight loss surgery afterwards and now I have to take a handful of vitamins every day.
Elroy the floater doesn’t come around much anymore except when my eyes are really tired.

I named mine.... The loopy one isn't as loopy as it t ones was. Now it's more of a string so damnit is its new name !

My floaters started about Christmas 2022, doctor told me part of old age. A couple of weeks later the flashes started. At first I thought it was reflections of Christmas lights I was seeing, Merry Christmas to me. Doctor told any radical changes to get into her office fast. I guess it one of thing you never hear about until you have it.

Like above I had the flashes, Dr actually said "as we get more candles on our birthday cake" meaning as we age... Really ?? The back of the eye that reflects light has an irregularity instead of being smooth and acts like a disco ball. Mine eventually went back to normal after about 6 weeks which was perfect timing for elk season, glassing really was annoying.

I had a severe floater in my right eye. It was driving me nuts. I shoot a lot of trap at a very high level, traveling around most of the summer to competitions. It got to the point that any target going right on posts 4 and 5 was a lost cause. Was causing problems reading, driving, darn near anything. It was like I had lost about 50, 60% of my vision. Went to a specialist and he said unless it was absolutely driving me nuts to live with it. The only other option was a vitrectomy. After about a year I finally elected to have the surgery. It was successful and have zero floaters In my right eye. Not recommending it for anyone as it has some risks but it worked for me. If you have it done DONT LOOK IT UP ON YOUTUBE!!!! You're better off just letting them do their thing. It was a bit uncomfortable, but not bad. I have no regrets having it done.

I have the semi colon in the right eye and the explanation point in the left, thankfully not in the center but still very annoying.

Talk to your eye doc. I'm starting to get more of them. I can't recall the specifics, but if memory serves they can be a symptom of other things. Either way, accurate shooter is not where you go for medical advice.
